St. Augustine, Florida is a city in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. It has a population of 69,790 as of the 2010 census. It was founded by Spaniards in 1492 and named after the Roman saint Auguscelius. The first Catholic church in St. Augustine was built in 1768 and served townspeople and travelers until 1824 when it burned down. In 2011 Census data released by Hillsborough County government showed that there were 101 ZIP Codes within boundaries defined by StAugustine limits- including those within its city limits- making it one of only two U.S., major metropolitan statistical areas statewide without any ZIP Code boundaries defined primarily outside city limits (the other being Austin, Texas). As demographics continue to change throughout Florida due both to immigration and natural increase among Hispanics/ Latinos who have resided here since before statehood ( composing 20%[1]of Floridas population), it is likely that many more ZIP Codes will become incorporated within Peel Township adjacent to downtown StAugustine over time if not already done so; this would result in a total area encompassingalmost three-quarters[2]of all Henderson County residents living within its borders if incorporation occurs given current zoning laws governing land use
The first European tosight the area now known as St. Augustine, Florida was a Spanish explorer, Miguel de Portolà, in 1565. The Spaniards named the area Tequesta after their captain of exploration, Estevan Tequesta. In 1607, Englishman John Morgan discovered and mapped this region for the British East India Company. In 1821, during the Seminole War, U.S. Army Major General Arthur MacArthur invaded Florida and captured Tampa Bay from the Seminoles. Afterward, Fort Brooke was built at what is now Lighthouse Point in order to protect Tampa Bay from future Seminole invasions.
