Saint Augustine, Florida is a small town located in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 1,869 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. St. Augustine's history goes back to 1795 when Father John O'Keefe founded the mission Santa Clara de Asis just outside of town on what is now called Park Boulevard. In 1875, Father James McDonnell built a convent on North State Street (now First Avenue) and named it after his patron saint, St. Augustine of Hippo. On December 12, 1906, the first church in Saint Augustine was dedicated by Bishop Basil Coady and dedicated to Our Lady of Peace and Charity-Stgr Columbanus which stands today at 1115 Orange Avenue between First and Second Streets. From its beginning as a small Catholic community until 1966 when it became an all Protestant municipality, Stacutta Chapel served as the parish center for everyone in town including African Americans who were Until then their only source of religious services other than personal visits from white Catholics or Catholic parishes with larger facilities such as churches or missions that could accommodate large crowds. The second church dedication took place on November 10th 1926 by Archbishop John Liston with donations by citizens groups including Mrs. Ethel Payne Cowles and Drs Alfonso Gomez and José Martinez who donated land for this purpose on East Main Street which had been used as a social hall since before World War I for dances given by members of various civic clubs which met there to celebrate patriotic events like welcome home dinners for soldiers coming home from World War I The growth of Stacutta Chapel led to construction of its first schoolhouse in 1929 followed by additions to include a gymnasium (1936), chapel (1948), four-room annex (1960), master bedroom/office suite (1968), kitchenette/diner (1976), two-story addition(1978), three floor(1980) with worship space upstairs on one level joined to living spaces downstairs on two levels through openings in walls providing natural light throughout the building; new hospital wing added in 1984; current structure completed in 1990
