In those early days there were no water mains or sewers but citizens used buckets filled with rainwater collected from gutters toflush their homes! Streets were named for natural features such as springs or lakes rather than political leaders or bureaucrats: Tryon Street (named for General Tryon who had fought Spain near here), Jackson Square (named for James Jackson who had led American forces against Spain at Pensacola Bay), Ferry Landing Road (named for Captain George Fenton ferrying troops across Mobile Bay to fight French forces) etc…Today we enjoy some excellent modern amenities including public transportation which makes getting around town much easier than it ever has been before while still retaining many cultural attractions dating back to pioneer times like San Miguel Chapel & its attached Missions Museum !!!!!!!!!
