St. Augustine, Florida is a town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ft. Pierce metropolitan area. This small town grew up around the St. Augustine Naval Air Station which was founded in 1912 and closed in 1986. It now houses the St Augustine Museum of Art and History as well as an amusement park known as The Adventure Zone. St. Augustine's history goes back to 1821 when Spanish traders discovered an island off the coast of Cuba called St Johns Island and named it Santiago de Cuba after their patron saint there (see also: Saint John's Eve). In 1826, Spain ceded this island to Great Britain under the Treaty of Paris following its war with Mexico over Texas independence (see: American Revolution). In 1829–30, Englishman James Kenedy explored and mapped Saint Johns Island before founding Jacksonville on it in 1830; Jacksonville became a city in 1907 pursuant to an act of Congress passed that year (see: Jacksonville Constitution).
