It was while living here that Sir John met Governor Andrew Jackson (1824-1846) and befriended him leading ultimately Jackson’s victory over Mexico at Hahama Creek on April 12, 1846 – becoming United States President four weeks later! In 1609, English explorer John Deere set out on a search for new land to exploit during his explorations through what is now Florida.. His party reached Fernandina Key on November 8th but were forced back by indigenous people led by Chief Seminole Juan Ponce de León who claimed ownership of that key.. Deere never again attempted to explore this coast beyond Fernandina Key but his name may be associated with this area due to his purchase of Indian Lucayan land off the coast near present day Pensacola about two years later.. On October 27th, 1763, James Cook sailed into what is now Tampa Bay and named it "St. Petersburg" after King George II's Vice Admiral Sir George Patrick MP for Cork which he had discovered while exploring South America... After Captain Cook's landfall many more ships visited here including French captain LaPerouse on September 28th 1794 who sighted "the most beautiful bay I ever saw" before landing some supplies at Fort Myers[1]...
