At trial, Hargrave swore he had no intention of harming anyone and claimed that he had just been defending himself from someone who was trying to rob him. However, jurors didn’t believe him and found him guilty of first degree murder. Two years later, in 1897, another case occurred when an employee at the St. Augustine Lighthouse was shot dead after refusing to open fire on a group of robbers who had broken into his workplace. This time around, however, there were no charges brought against the shooter because he couldn’t be found guilty due to lack of evidence. The Diocese was elevated to an archdiocese by Pope John XII in 1268 AD and finally became an apostolic see by Pope Urban VIII in 1532. Under Archbishop Richard Busby (1881-1964), St. Augustine's cathedral was dedicated on December 5th, 1907 withuneration from the United States Congress that year as a gift to celebrate American independence from Spain
