There are many gun sights in St. Augustine, Florida. The earliest sighting devices used by Native Americans were stone points that could be inserted into the ground to track game. In 1795, Captain John Smith and his expedition discovered what is now Jacksonville, Florida and named it for George Washington. In 1819, Lt. Governor James Ketchum recommended the construction of a fort on Pensacola Bay to protect the Floridian towns from Seminole Indians. The fort was built in 1824 and later renamed Fort Pickens after United States Colonel Edward Pickens who commandeered supplies meant for the garrison at Pensacola Bay. By 1870, guns had become an important part of military strategy as they helped defend against Indian attacks along the Gulf Coast of America. With this increase in firepower came increased demand for firearms range facilities throughout the region. A business agreement was made between five local rifle associations and Gainesville rifle manufacturer Waddell & Richardson in 1873 which established a pistol range at Fort Brooke on Jupiter Key near downtown St. Augustine; it became known as “Gainesville” Rifle Range because Gainesville was adjacent to it on US 301A (now US 98). The first target shooting competition in St. Augustine took place on March 11th, 1896 when Drs Jernigan and Hickey organized a tournament at Henry Ford’s rifle field off Naugatuck Street; it was their first event as members of First Northern Athletic Club Incorporated (later National Rifle Association) with standing room only! From 1897-1900 there were annual matches at Orange Park called “The Great Game” where teams consisting mostly of citizens from St Augustine competed against each other using shotguns; these matches also featured bandshell competitions which later evolved into NRA sanctioned Trap/Amateur events today! In 1916, World War I began and firearm manufacturers began producing munitions specifically for WWI; this led to an increase in gun production throughout the state including Gunters Manufacturing Company Ltd., one of just four companies manufacturing pistols in Florida during WWI! Eventually 219 pistols were produced by Gunters Manufacturing Company Ltd., making them one of the few handgun manufacturers statewide! Production ended around 1920 due to economic conditions but their legacy continues through modern day productions by subsidiaries such as G&P Firearms Corporation – home country plant of SIG Sauer USA – located adjacent to Naval Air Station Jacksonville (JAX) across I-4 from downtown Jacksonville! “In 1946 [Marion County Sheriff Clarence] King put up a sign reading: "Guns don't kill people - People kill people with guns." This slogan has been closely associated with Sheriff King ever since….” Today there are over 400 gun businesses operating throughoutStAugustineCounty employing over 1800 people directly or indirectly related thereto…..Gun sight manufacture is still very common here with about 60% employment based around pistols alone……There are some interesting stories attached too….. For example…. In 1948 Joe DeAngelo started manufacturing sights for Remington Arms Co., now Crossfire Arms LLC….He originally started designing sights specifically for waterfowl hunting….. After 10 years designing various designs he decided upon something new that would revolutionize handguns—-the DeAngelo Defense Sight……After successful testing he released his design under the trade name Dakota Targetmaster……Distributed by Jackson Precision Products Inc., now part of American Outdoor Brands

The first gun sights in St. Augustine were a pair of French-made optics called the "Tourneau" sights. These were erected on the square in 1797 by Captain John Smith, who was then the acting governor of Florida and commander of the British military forces in this area. The town began to grow rapidly around this time and it was not until 1819 that an actual fort was built, which provided defense against attacks from Seminole Indians. In 1828, American General Andrew Jackson invaded Florida and after defeating General Manuel de la Vega at Lake Okeechobee, he advanced into Spanish territory. On July 12th, 1828 General Jackson ordered his army to move upriver towards St. Augustine along the Gulf Coast. When they reached the mouth of River Apalachicola, they found that there was no river leading inland so they continued downstream to Fort Brooke whereuponJackson ordered them to turn around and march back upstream again for another attempt at invading Spanish territory. This failed effort led to Jackson's decision to build Fort Union on October 15th further upriver from St Augustine – this became one of Jacksonville's most important military installations during its early years as a United States colony (it still is). After occupying Spanish territory for more than two years during which time no offensive action occurred against US troops stationed here, Major James A. Wilkinson took command of Confederate forces defending Jacksonville on November 15th, 1861 and soon afterwards laid siege to Fort Union with over 10,000 men under his command (the garrison had only 7 cannon). After several days of bombardment by Confederate artillery shells and gunfire, Fort Union fell on December 3rd after which Confederate forces withdrew eastward towards Jacksonville; however their loss did not mean that Spain losing control over Florida! In 2003 voters pass Measure 2 to reelect Mayor Lenny Curry as mayor despite his opposition to virtually all aspects of city management including annexation applications submitted by adjacent cities seeking annexation into the largest city inDuval County On May 10th 2006 Hurricane Katrina caused extensive damage to most if not all aspects of City government which has hampered redevelopment efforts since then Reconstruction has proceeded slowly due to lack of available funding and competition from other urban areas withinDuval County .
