From the early 1800s until the present, gun security in St. Augustine has been a topic of interest and concern for both residents and visitors. Although some improvements were made subsequent to Mayor Ritchie’s tenure (e.g., installation of CCTV cameras), overall gun security remained generally satisfactory until recent times when problems began to arise related to open carry laws in nearby Jacksonville Beach parkland which caused numerous injuries and even fatalities among local pedestrians using handguns whileunsafely carried within municipal boundaries adjacent to municipally-owned land leased by Jacksonville Beach Parks & Recreation Department

In the late 1800s, St. Augustine was known as a gun-friendly town. The city's arsenal was one of the largest in Florida and it was home to several prominent rifle manufacturers. In 1905, Mayor John A. Campbell enacted an ordinance that prohibited handgun ownership within city limits. Gun control advocates argued that this law was designed to prevent crime, but it also had the unintended consequence of making guns more available to criminals. Gun control advocates successfully lobbied for a repeal of the ordinance in 1922, and handguns were again allowed within city limits. However, this new policy did not last long; by 1923, handgun owned by civilians had increased significantly due to the availability of firearms from dealers outside of town. In 1928, Mayor Campbell passed an ordinance allowing residents to own shotguns and handguns indiscriminately. This policy remained in place until 1934 when it was repealed due to public pressure – ammunition sales now required a license from the state police department before purchase. The repeal of the ammo regulation led to a surge in gun sales in St. Augustine; by 1935, there were over 100 licensed handgun dealers operating throughout the city. Gun violence continued to increase during this time period due to gang members trying to obtain weapons for their conflicts (an issue which would later become more prevalent in Jacksonville). In 1941, Mayor Campbell passed an ordinance creating limitations on who could possess handguns – only citizens with a valid pistol permit could keep them now be able to do so. The policy remains in place today and is one of the most restrictive firearms regulations in Florida .

St. Augustine is a city in the U.S. state of Florida, on the Petrona Peninsula near Jacksonville and St. Augustine Beach. It has a population of over 240,000 as of 2018 and is the largest city in both Jacksonville and St. Johns County. The area that now became St. Augustine was first settled by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans in what is now south-central Florida about 4,000 years ago. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2 1945, many Japanese refugees moved into St Augustine seeking refuge – some settling permanently while others transiently occupied various parts of town before eventually returning home several months later; however, most never regained their lost properties or their original social status quo ante Hurricane Irma wrecked much property hereabouts during August 2017 storm surge event thereby highlighting how easily infrastructure can be destroyed following natural disasters such as hurricanes). The areas today known as Downtown St Augustine (the central business district), Midtown (the eastern edge around State Street), Southside (southwest corner past First Avenue), Beaufort Peninsula(northwest corner past US1) were all heavily impacted by Irma with significant damage done to high-rise buildings including two major hotels located within easy walking distance of each other: Renaissance Jacksonville Beach Resort & Casino across US1 from I-95 Exit 227A off exit 255B Sunrise Boulevard just north of downtown SaintAugustine beachfront between eastbound Interstate 95 Exit 222D off exit 227A counts as an important commercial center especially given its proximity to key shopping destinations such as Mall at Port Everglades next door both inside and outside Smart Market which anchors much retail activity taking place in close vicinity including adjacent University Village Shopping Center also counted among this Commercial Scene.– see list below for more information/photos documenting Irma damage.) On 8 May 2015 Third World Youth Day celebration erupted ashore along Dune Road frontage bordering downtown Saint Augustine beachfront resulting in arrests few tickets were issued however several parents reported forcible removing children from shoreline without proper clothing etc.. Additionally, VAWA mandated that all federal agencies must conduct audits to ensure that domestic violence programs are providing access to necessary resources and effective support for victims.
