Gun magazines in St. Augustine, Florida have a long and complex history. In 1818, the first gun magazine in the area was established by Captain Edward Pyle in what is now downtown St. Augustine. The first issue of Pyle's magazine was published on February 3, 1818. At that time, there were only six firearms in the United States and two guns per person per house.
The first gun shop in St. Augustine was established by Samuel Henson on October 8, 1824. Gunsmith John Aiken opened his shop from its current location on Second Street between Constitution Avenue and Market Square on November 1, 1825. Henson soon became known for his high quality handguns and rifles as well as his pistols and shotguns.
In 1830, Captain John Jumper of the Ulysses S Grant Expedition started trading with Native Americans at Fort Brooke which later became Spanish Fort (St Augustine). This allowed civilian traders to trade with Native Americans without fear of being raided or captured by the Indians. As a result of this trade activity, several guns were acquired by American citizens including Daniel Boone who bought an antique cannon from Captain Jumper for $200 on December 5th, 1830. In 1831 Lieutenant Governor David Levy erected a fortification at Pensacola Bay which limited British access to the region so vessels could not enter or leave without permission from Spain which caused a large increase in smuggling activity off Spanish Fort into Florida through Pensacola Bay . captain Elisha Porter collected supplies for soldiers stationed at Pensacola during this time and he purchased four cannons fromCaptain Jumper for $1,000 each on January 1st , 1832 .
During this time period several other stores also opened up such as Gadsden Rifle & Pistol Emporium (John Davenport), James Fenton’s Store (JFenton) & Brothers Auctioneering House(James Fenton), Solomon Baily’s Gun Shop(Solomon Baily) and Gifford’s Sporting Goods(Gifford). These businesses traded firearms directly with military/police forces throughout southwest Florida as well as selling ammunition to civilians outside of town limits (St Cloud county included). Many of these businesses closed over time due to competition from larger dealers or because new technologies made trading firearms more difficult or expensive than it had been before. At about this same time Captains George Mitchell and William Tatum decided to establish separate stations within St Augustine called “Mitchell Station”and “Tatum Station” respectively. These stations served as point-of-sale locations where soldiers could purchase items like ammunition and food while also providing transportation back to their unit important because military units could not travel unsupported across open country. By 1840 both Mitchell & Tatum Stations had been abandoned due to lack of customers or opposition from Spanish authorities.

As part of this effort, Lubbock donated land within what is now downtown Statedrop Park for use as a public square bordered by Broadwalk Avenue on the east side, Constitution Avenue on the west side, Flagler Street on the north side and Government Center Drive on the south side; today's intersection includes all six blocks of Broadwalk Avenue between Government Center Drive and Flagler Street.[1] In 1868, developer George Biddle erected what is now Downtown Jacksonville – then called Jacksonville – as Jacksonville's first commercial district.[2][3][4] In 1931,[5] Jacksonville annexed much ofwhat is now Statedrop Park excepting what is now Downtown Statedrop Park itself because then Jacksonville was considered too small for such an annexation;[6] however today Downtown Jacksonville still retains some vestige of its original character including many early 19th century buildings along Constitution Avenue which form one block long walkway called "The Row".[7] On January 1st 1890,[8][9] both Fort Pierce (in Indian River County)[10][11][12][13][14][15]and Jupiter (in Duval County)[16]) became municipalities within Miami-Dade County under newly created Municipal Law § 26 et seq.;[17][18]+the first municipal election took place that year. At that time there were only three towns in Miami-Dade: Doral (westchester district), Hollywood (north central district),and Plantation(south central district).[19]:277 On November 3rd 1907,[20]:271 following ratification by voters in each town referendum,[21]:261 both Fort Pierce[22],and Jupiterbecame incorporated cities under Municipal Law § 462 et seq., respectively.–both formerly unincorporated villages before their incorporation into municipalities.[23](Election Results: November 3rd 1907)Fort Pierce’s incorporation led to discussion about annexing nearby Martin Sound which had been unincorporated since 1901 because it lay just outside territorial limits established by Territorial Legislature but had not been annexed since 1898 because no legal process existed to annex it given its location near Fort Myers proper.–Martin Sound eventually became part of Broward County –Jupiter’s incorporation led to similar discussion about annexing nearby Everglades National Park which had been unincorporated since 1903 due to its location near Homestead Air Force Base but had not been annexed since 1904 because no legal process existed to annex it given its Location adjacent Plantation.)
