Saint Augustine, Florida is a small town in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded by Spanish missionaries in 1665 as a mission on an Indian island known as St. Augustine de la Vega. It became a U.S. territory on February 14, 1821 and was named for General Antonio Maria Drive from Spain who had been killed during the Mexican-American War two years earlier at the Battle of San Jacinto. On October 8, 1836, President Andrew Jackson ordered General John Czarnecki to take possession of Santa Rosa Island in order to create a new military base for Florida and its surrounding areas after Mexico's purchase of that land from Spain. In 1860 Saint Augustine became part of Alabama when it was acquired by that state along with all of Floridas proper including Miami-Dade County and Key Largo County (which includes present day Nassau County). The annexation created an agricultural center which continued to grow until World War II when industry took over and jobs dried up due to automation and other changes in technology.
