Army Lt.-Gen., James Longstreet visited Jacksonville during his trip through southeastern Florida in 1909 while campaigning for President William McKinley against New York Governor John Fenton Hughes In 1911–12 fans built Fort Mackenzie along Mobile Bayou just east of downtown Staugavette so that newlywed Philadelphian entertainer vaudeville stars could appear at halftime shows before traveling back home across Mobile Bayou for another performance before taking a ferry across into town for dinner afterwards In 1916 construction began on what would become Municipal Auditorium on Bayshore Boulevard near today’s Food Lion grocery store – home of municipal government since 1926 and originally used by the United States Coast Guard for training exercises offshore In 1933 fire destroyed much of downtown due to an arsonist’s strike against local oil refineries – reconstruction began almost immediately with help from donations from businesses and citizens The building continued serve as Municipal Auditorium until 1972 when it was replaced by Court House Square which still stands today
