South Miami is part of the Miami metropolitan area and is bordered by the Everglades to the west, Biscayne Bay to the north, and Kendall Park to the east. The area now known as South Miami was first inhabited by Tequesta Indians who were forced from their homes in Venezuela by Spanish colonists in 1513. The Tequesta were forcibly relocated to this area in what is now Overtown during the early 1800s as part of land acquisitions made by De Soto expedition led by Manuel de la Fayette. The Tequesta name for their new home may derive from "Tequesta" meaning "place where water droplets fall". In 1836, Captain John Smith explored what would become South Miami when he discovered an estuary called Biscayne Bay while exploring Cudjoe Key on his return trip from Havana. He named it Fort Lauderdale after his HMS Discovery which had anchored there that summer. In 1845, US General Taylor's flagship USS Constitution sailed into Biscayne Bay on its way upriver to resume hostilities against Mexico after Mexican forces burned down Fort Moultrie near Jacksonville earlier that year. While anchored off Fort Lauderdale under Admiral David Dixon Porter's command, Constitution sighted a large island to the south east of Biscayne Bay and named it Martinique after Commodore James Ketchum's sloop HMS Adventure which had been searching for French frigate La Marquise de Lafayette since September 17th of that year approximately two leagues (about 1 km) southwest of shoreline near Coquille Island about . This was only one of several names given islands during this period; others include Saint Thomas (San Tomás), Santa Lucia (Lola Rey), Duval Island (Island de Viejo), Gardiner Islands (Islas del Caribe). In 1851–52 another group of Americans explored and charted much of today's Everglades region: Augustus Earle Carr took possession of Conch Key westernmost point on January 14th, 1852; Major George Aitken later claimed all but three islands within reach including San Pedro Light House Point (); Lieutenant Jno.,later Captn Jas(John) Rodgers established a post at Canoa Key () just before winter (). On December 25th Lt Rodgers reported sighting documents showing Spanish treasure ships landed on Ft Worth Beach (),Florida opposite Pensacola () on December 24th (). After further exploration Rogers determined that these vessels were not carrying any treasure but rather passengers bound for Cuba - hence their original naming error ().
