The area now known as South Miami was first populated in the early 1800s. The name "South Miami" is derived from a combination of two phrases, "south of the mouth of the river" and "the south side." The River mouth refers to the tip of Key Largo and South Miami, while the south side means all or most of what is now Flagler County. Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered Florida in 1513 and named it La Florida. In 1795, Spain ceded this territory to America after losing a battle with England on Isla Cuba. In 1814, during the Mexican-American War, American General James Wilkinson won an important victory over Mexican forces at Monterrey Creek near present-day Belle Harbor on Miami’s east coast. Wilkinson then marched his army through what is today Flagler County to reach Tampa Bay. Afterward, he reoccupied La Florida and renamed it Tampa Bay Territory. A year later, following another military victory at Carrero Creek against Mexico’s general Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, Wilkinson declared himself President of Texas and claimed all of Alta California for America as part of that state’s expanding into new lands west of the Mississippi River. American settlers began arriving in large numbers along both coasts because they saw land that could be homesteaded and developed for agriculture rather than leased from Native Americans or sold to others under Treaty conditions. During this time period – around 1845-1848 – there were several instances where Indian attacks against white settlers in what became known as “The Waco Massacre” led to violence among local farmers who retaliated by burning down villages inhabited by Indians near Fort Worth (now Arlington). This event served as a rallying cry for local militia groups who used similar tactics against other Indian tribes throughout Southwest Texas until 1840 when Major General Zachariah Taylor finally drove them out from their traditional home territory in Central Texas instead using force after years of peace negotiations mediated by Ulysses S.
