In 1795, Captain John Smith explored this coastline on his voyage along what would become known as Piney Creek estuary which linked Tampa Bay to Lake Okeechobee through channels between Mobile Bay and Lake Monroe; he named these channels "the Keys". He also noted that nearby Fort Myers was a small bayular island (later known as Key Biscayne) connecting Tampa Bay to Indian River Lagoon north of Key West: he called it "Biscayne Point". In 1796, Pierre Jean Baptiste Le Moyne de La Salle discovered St Augustine Island while sailing along the Gulf Stream; he named it Saint Augustine After his patron saint – henceforth Saint Augustine’s Land or simply Saint Augustine’s Isle (later renamed Castilla del Mar). In 1802, Martiniquean immigrants began arriving here as indentured servants under Spanish rule following France's victory over Spain during the Napoleonic Wars; these immigrants became known as Cubans/Flemish Canadians because many spent time living near Montreal before coming ashore in Cuba's Porto Rico (now Haiti) for similar labor opportunities. They built homes on parcels then designated for sugarcane plantations outside of present day SouthMiami proper but continued visiting periodically until 1865 when French forces burned all Havana sugar cane stocks in retaliation for American victories at Yorktown Over land ceded by Spain to Great Britain only days earlier! Many early settlers came from poor families who could not afford even one acre Olives Hill Road today’s Little Haiti Boulevard fronting SW corner I-10 exit 9A just south Of US Hwy 1 exits 5 & 6

In 1912, two brothers named Harry Eisner and Samuel Sarnoff developed farmland along State Road A1A between Biscayne Boulevard and Coconut Grove Avenue in what would become South Miami. The brothers opened an ice cream parlor called Harry's Candy Shop in 1915; their store remains open today as one of downtown's first businesses ever licensed as a restaurant/cafeteria combo – it also still offers its own unique gift shop experience complete with animatronic characters from various Hanna Barbera cartoons currently exhibited inside! As part of annexation negotiations followingbrowardcounty’s creation under statehood in 1959, then-Mayor Adolfo “Adolf” Fraga pushed for annexation into Dade County; this request fell through due to opposition from then-County Manager Manuel Diaz and other powerful officials withinBrowardCounty government. However, fraga did not relent until his death ten years later after long campaigns waged by civic organizations he had supported including lawyers across town at Wertheim Law Firm – ultimately resulting in SouthMiami becoming one of the first cities on American soil to be officially annexed into another municipality! SouthMiami consolidated with neighboring NorthMiamiBeach on January 1st 1979 under Mayor Manuel Diaz’s leadership following decades long planning efforts spearheaded by members including then Chief Operating Officer (COO) Bob Lutz himself!
