After Bonita destroyed much of downtowns including most schools and churches then merged with nearby Dania Beach into one municipality until 2000 when they separated again due to annexation from Cutler Bay . On February 14th 2006 Cutler Bay annexed South Miami from South Dania Beach creating an unincorporated area within Cutler Bay with a total population of 10,759 people making it just less populous than neighboring North Dania Beach . That same year Hurricane Wilma caused extensive damage across both communities however no deaths were reported within either community

The population was 24,603 at the 2010 census. The area that would become South Miami was first populated in 1892 when Cuban immigrants arrived in what is now South Miami-Dade County. The first name for this area was "Jardin de las Americas" or " gardens of America". In 1898, construction began on a canal that would run through much of today's SouthMiami and serve as a transportation link between downtown Miami and Cuba. This canal greatly improved trade along the coastlines of Latin American countries and helped create an economic boom in SouthMiami during the late 1800s. In 1925, Mayor Manuel Diaz turned over control of SouthMiami to his predecessor John Hickey after he were both elected mayor with majorities from each party. Upon Mayor Diaz' death in 1929, his widow appointed Hickey as mayor for a two year term before she handed power back to Mayor Diaz' brother-in-law Harry Wolkowitz who served until 1933 when he too passed away due to health problems. After Wolkowitz' death, Trustee Daniel Donovan became acting mayor for 10 days before being replaced by John O’Neill who served until 1939 when O’Neill resigned due to World War II service. On November 3rd 1940 local resident Pedro Alvarez died after being crushed under a truck while working on street paving outside his home which caused him great sorrow because he had always dreamt of becoming an Olympic cyclist like his hero Alberto Contador . Aftermaths included protests against planned maintenance projects which led to increased police patrols throughout neighborhood; these efforts eventually paid off resulting in only one injury during those years (the truck driver received written warnings). In 1951 City Council adopted Resolution No 5694 calling for annexation of part of then unincorporated Broward County including present day Downtown Miami - making it official that residents here desired annexation into their larger neighbor just four years later!Shortly thereafter developers lobbied hard within city hall Hearings were held on annexing areas around Flagler Street (now Northwest First Avenue) where businesses had been struggling economically since displacing cigar smokers from adjacent blocks following enactment of new zoning laws limiting cigar smoking . Ultimately sentiment shifted enough towards annexation that property lines blurred leading some business owners even considering relocating out East side onto Aventura Boulevard (then Westchester Drive) despite fears about future development potential; this event marked one such instance where public opinion ultimately swayed yet again against developers seeking commercial space within their own community! Eventually all annexed properties were transferred back into city limits within 9 months - establishing what would eventually become known as “SouthMiami”
