As a result of these changes take place throughout much or all south Miami between 1959 and 2013: land values increased dramatically due to new development around Stonington Road/Biscayne Boulevardogens Avenues; jobs moved into newly developed areas such as Brickell Avenue/Eighth Street Southwest near English Harbour Marina; white flight began moving away from poverty-stricken neighborhoods on Biscayne Boulevardogens Avenues (mainly due to concerns about crime); black race started becoming more common as wealthier residents purchased properties adjacent to luxury hotels near Brickell Avenue/Eighth Street Southwest

The area now known as South Miami was first inhabited by the Timucua people. The area was part of Spanish Florida until 1795 when Britain ceded Florida to Spain. The area became part of the United States following the Mexican-American War in 1848. In 1906, a group of Miami businessmen organized what is now called "The Big Four" – Henry Flagler, J.P. Morgan, Fenton Hutton and Andrew Witty – to purchase land east of Biscayne Bay for a new city they named Miami Beach after them. On July 16, 1909, Mayor Manuel López wantonly plowed through an open field on Avenida Pan American in Overtown with a team of horses and six mules pushing a large dirt dumpster filled with refuse into which dredges had been sunk to create Everglades Freshwater Park. The park was originally designated as University Park but was renamed in honor of the Big Four investors in 1911.
