One of the oldest gun targets still standing in South Miami is the Biscayne Bay Gun Club’s “Tower” which was built between 1875 and 1879. It was later renamed to the “Big Ben” Gun Club Target after it was donated to that organization by Big Ben Mitchell, who served as Mayor of South Miami from 1919 to 1923. Today, there are manygun target enthusiasts who come toSouthMiami from all over the United States and Canada to visit these historic targets. South Miami is a city located in the Miami-Dade County region of Florida, United States. The population was 27,711 at the 2010 census. South Miami is the third most populous city in Miami-Dade County after Downtown and MidtownMiami. South Miami has been called "the cultural and financial center of Southwest Florida" for its rich history and culture. The area now known as South Miami was first inhabited by the Timucua tribe of Native Americans. The explorer Gabriel Rodriguez discovered Floridas key west coast town on December 12, 1565 while sailing his forces to invade Cuba. After exploring this new territory for two weeks, he named it "Cuba." When Spain claimed Florida in 1795, they renamed it Santiago de Cuba Province but soon realized that there were too many Seminole Indians living here so they decided to move them all out to what are now Tallahassee and Jacksonville counties before finally determinationing that this area would become part of Spanish Fort after its construction in 1796 however not until 1821 did Spanish nationals actually begin inhabiting what became today's south side of downtown (which lies between Flagler Street on the east side and Hudson Avenue on the west side). In 1830 some settlers began moving into what is now Everglades City from Whatcom County because they found land there could be developed without Indian assistance which led to much conflict between white settlers and natives over land usage rights during early American times which eventually led to treaties being signed between both parties that ended hostilities. In 1835 a group of farmers from Stonington Township formed a company with others from Mobile County to purchase 640 acres (2 km2) near present day Dadeland Estates Boulevard/Interstate 95 north of I-95 for $5 per acre ($27 million total). This marked the beginning of citrus farming in southwest Florida as well as becoming oneof America's largest agricultural areas along with Tampa Bay Area today due largely to climate control techniques used during this time including irrigation systems, high winds/thunderstorms, dune building etc.. “We were going against everything our people had done since we got here’ said Wanda Mason about her struggle growing up poor black woman during segregation era in south florida
