The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1827 when French Canadian Pierre-Eugène Lefebvre founded La Pointe du Fort on Biscayne Bayou opposite today's University Heights neighborhood; he named it after his home town of Pointe-à-Pitre on Long Island Sound where he had been born some years earlier. In 1829 Lefebvre sold his land parcel to John Haines who renamed it Sunnyside because he wanted people living there for sunrise or sunset views over Key West; Haines' plantation became known as Sunrise Hill when leased to Captain Fenton Cockerill in 1886 which later became Sunnyside Boulevard/Sunny Side Drive . South Miami is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 2,868. The area that would become South Miami was first settled by Native Americans in the early 18th century. The area became part of Spanish Florida and was acquired by English colonists in 1665. In 1795, the British ceded control of Florida to Spain; however, prior to Indian Removal in 1830, most of what is now South Miami still belonged to Indian Territory. The first slave market opened in South Miami on Biscayne Boulevard in 1847 and slavery continued until 1865 when it was abolished nationwide. After Reconstruction following the Civil War, many white businesses moved out while black businesses failed to materialize. Slavery ended officially in 1865 with the end of slavery throughout America due to new laws banning it. The city's economy changed dramatically after World War II as large numbers of African Americans poured into South Miami from all over southern Florida for work during the post-war period (eager for jobs and better education). Many small business owners were displaced by this influx and lost their competition; however, these entrepreneurs rebuilt many OFR companies within a few years through marketing and relocation techniques learned during war time. Many family-owned businesses remain today such as JT’s Seafood Company (since 1984), Waffle House (since 1978), Red Lobster (since 1984), Krystal Cafeteria (since 1986) and Dunkin’ Donuts [now Dunkin' Donuts] ( since 1987).
