The history of South Miami, Florida can be traced back to the early 1800s when the area was part of Spanish Fort. The fort was built on the currentsite of Miami Beach and it served as a military post until 1821. In that year, the United States acquired Florida from Spain and began to develop it as a territory. The first American settlers in what is now South Miami were Colonel Augustus Smith and his family who arrived in 1824. The Smiths were followed by other English-speaking families in 1830 and 1840. By 1851, there were over 100 residents living in South Miami. During the mid-19th century, many businesses and organizations sprang up in South Miami due to its strategic location at the tip of Biscayne Bay. These include:the “Volunteers’ Republican Club” which met at various locations around town;the Masonic Lodge #10;and two churches, First Congregational (now Christ Episcopal) and Second Baptist (now Methodist). In 1876, sugarcane became dominant in this region and new commercial buildings weren’t erected for many years because sugarcane workers used small homes for their residences instead. In 1900, after several hurricanes destroyed most of Miami Beach with floods damage, Mayor James Hialeah decided to build an emergency levee across Biscayne Bay which would protect southbound traffic from entering northbound lanes during high tide events. This project was completed in 1911 but didn’t stop flooding problems that plagued southbound traffic on Flagler Boulevard until 1943 when construction began on an additional channelized section between I-95/US-1 and Everglades Boulevard which eliminated much flooding along Flagler Boulevard during heavy rains season. After World War II ended, development resumed speedily due to increased tourism due to popular shows like Star Trek which took place at nearby Hollywood Hills hotels during that time period! South Miami experienced rapid growth following World War II thanks to newly developed air travel linking this area with other parts of Florida – primarily Jacksonville – making it easy for people moving here to find work or start their own businesses quickly! As more people moved into this area there was also growing demand for housing so numerous subdivisions were created throughout SouthMiami starting with Armour Subdivision in 1955 followed by Artis Subdivision (now Ivy Garden), Park Place subdivision (then known as Parkland), East Side subdivision (later called Sunrise Lakes), etcetera all designed specifically for housing development!. Today there are over 5500 homes spread throughout these subdivisions making it one of largest real estate markets in Southwest Florida! The late 20th century saw some major changes take place within SouthMiami including:the opening of Marlins Stadium by MLB team Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria;changes made to zoning laws allowing more McMansions/condos/motorboats/etc.;andthe arrival of both USF football teams creating even more demand for housing units! Throughout this time period communities such as Suncoast Village underwent extensive redevelopment becoming increasingly diverse while remaining close knit together despite having different names throughout the years!
In the 1800s, South Miami was home to a number of plantations. One such plantation was owned by Spanish Governor Manuel de Miranda. In 1837, after being bought by American Captain John Gadsden, Miranda sold his plantation to American investors for $1 million. The land now includes part of downtown South Miami and many of the neighborhoods around it.
