South Miami, Florida is a city located on the southern tip of Miami-Dade County,Florida. The population was 71,813 at the 2010 census. The area now known as South Miami was first inhabited by Chumash and Seminole Native Americans who called it "Nahantoni", meaning "place of many waters." The area became part of Spanish America in 1665 when Isidore de Leon sold it to Juan Pablo Menéndez de Avilés. In 1821, John Tyler decided to create a new U.S. colony on what would become the mainland United States and selected South Miami as its site. On January 10th, 1824, the first settlers arrived in what is now South Miami Beach with 27 others under Captains Richard Cranch and James White arriving from Havana, Cuba aboard HMS Rattler. They founded Fort Lauderdale on November 3rd and named their town after General Marqués de Santa Anna y Costilla who had led an expedition against Spanish American forces at Mina River in 1795; Santa Anna had been speaker of the Santiago Legislative Assembly which opposed Spain's efforts to cede Puerto Rico to Great Britain during their war for independence (known as the War of Jenkins' Ear). Captain White also donated land for a courthouse and schoolhouse in what is now Downtown SouthMiami Beach that would serve as one of only two cotton plantations in continuous operation within U.S.-controlled territory up until 1898 when they were bought by Cuban interests following Fidel Castro's takeover of Cuba
