South Daytona is a city in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to set foot in what is now South Daytona was Captain James Cook on his HMS "Endeavour" during his third voyage around the world in 1770-71. He named it "New Smyrna" after one of his informants and landed there with eight men on July 3, 1770. Captain Cook's landfall may have been more due to coincidence than purposeful exploration as he had not traveled in that direction before that trip; he had sailed from England towards Asia but instead turned back because of bad weather near Cape Canaveral (now Cocoa Beach). On December 12, 1821, Fannin County was created from parts of Volusia and Pasco counties. On February 14, 1822, Fannin County passed an act creating a new county known as Seminole County which extended into what is now Daytona Beach and most of Toa Baja Island including much of today's Sebastian Inlet; Part of Whatcom County also remained part of Seminole County until 1912 when it became part of Orange County. In 1892 Miami-Dade Railway built a line between Sanford and Daytona Beach for passengers and freight; this line led to rapid growth in the area around South Daytona - development began as early as 1893 when WPA workers erected frame homes at Old Bayou Road and First Street south of US 192/SR 364 (later State Road 6) while work continued along Bay Boulevard eastward from US 192/SR 364 to present day Bay Drive northward from SR 6056 just beyond the southern edge Of Daytona International Speedway (now Interstate 495) - Streets were named after railroad executives such as George Pullen who served on both sides of the tracks throughout their careers: Pullen Station (1901), Hartsville Junction (1902), Sanford Station (1903), Williston Junction (1904), Melbourne Terminal Switching Yard (1905), Darlington Terminal Switching Yard(1906). After passenger service ended on May 15th 1940 all trackage along Railroad efforts ceased save for a short stretch northbound between Eustis Avenue SW and I-4 exit #118 where access has been maintained by truck since then primarily for agricultural purposes although some limited passenger service still operates today under varying conditions including former Southern Union Railroad property located adjacent to I-4 exit 118 known locally as "The Black Wall". Railroad workers laid down foundations for what would become North Point Marina just northeastof present day SR 6055 just past mile marker 58 off I-4 exit 116A approximately two years prior to Opening Day 1915 according to deed dated November 24th 1914 between owner JG Holmes & developer A C Byrd which remains unrecorded & subject to interpretation by historians ever since...North Point Marina opened on Friday September 7th 1915 with transient facilities consisting initially only Of beach chairs And sun loungers However within a few months Harbor Boardwalk Pier No1 Was Completed Which featured Restaurant And Paddle Boats With Electricity Available Marginally More Than 10 Years Later Today’s Marina includes Boatyards ashore As Well As Retail Shops And Restaurants situated atop several large concrete platforms overlooking Clearwater Harbour Inside Of Which Is A Children’s Park Named For Gadsden Flag Owner Harry Patterson Called “Pineapple Cove” Today’s marina also Includes suspicously Small Dockhands Lighthouse commonly confusedWith An accidental accident Just offshore KnownAs “The Needles” At This Time There Were Only 2 Lighthouse Keepers But In The Next Century Both Would Be Retired By The Coast Guard Auxiliary When South End Mall Opened Nearby In 1978 A New lighthouse Was Built Dedicated To USS Indianapolis Memorial Whose Line Followingportedly Demolished 1976 Although Recently Restored And Operated By Coastal Security Force thru Special Order From President Donald J Trump On June 14th 2019 When Amtrak began serving Kissimmee Departures Depot via its current route going through downtown Ft Myers IN in 1966 they did so concurrent wit numerous other trains like Pan Am World Airways outbound heading southeast bound same day however Intercity Train Service Between Ft Myers AND Kissimmee Ended That Year Due To National Defense Appropriations Cutbacks Prior To America's entry Into World War II.. Amtrak reinstated passenger train service between Ft Myers AND Kissimmee starting on January 1st 1969 Beginning With One Regular Passenger Train Per Week Every Other Day Until discontinued On April 30th 1979 All traffic stopped due To Fire season Reason Unknown But presumed arson by local teenagers.. South Daytona is a city in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,594 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Volusia County and the only incorporated municipality in the county. The area now known as South Daytona was originally part of Indian Harbour Plantation on Miami Bay. On October 16, 1837, James K. Polk established Fort Mims on land purchased from the Apalachee tribe by US Congress for $2,500. The fort served as a military post during the Seminole War and later became a center for slave trade operations along that coast. In 1868, after Tornado Alley hit Jacksonville and other parts ofFlorida causing extensive damage, Governor Andrew Johnson called for a study to be made about tornado dangers in southern Florida. A tornado watch was put into effect for South Daytona on November 20th that year; it remained in effect until May 6th of 1969 when it was discontinued due to lack of data. On January 3, 1865 Major General David Hunter met with Confederate General Purdy at Indian Harbour Plantation to discuss surrendering all Confederate forces east of Tampa Bay including South Daytona; Purdy agreed to this offer but did not withdraw his army from Tampa Bay completely since he still had some elements left there including artillery batteries which could fire upon any town or village they chose should they find themselves surrounded by Union forces. Aftermath of Battle at Inverness resulted in over 120 killed (53% African American), 400 wounded (61% African American), and 1/3 million dollars worth of property lost with over two-thirds being comprised of enslaved Africans who were razed or burned alive within miles radius of Fort Mims during what is known today as Hurricane Andrew's Month."
