From 1893 until 1907, mail was delivered twice each week between Jacksonville and Amelia Island through horse drawn wagons drawn by five horses each pulling two carts loaded with letters and packages weighing up to seventy pounds (twenty kilograms) per package. The first electric streetlights were installed along US 1/US 8 south of Main Street in 1924 when VOLUSIA ELECTRICITY COOPERATIVE went into operation as a cooperative district under state law providing power to villages without individual contracts with private generators or those supplying electricity too expensively (this system later evolved into today's municipal electrical grid).
