South Daytona is a city located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 103,912 at the 2010 census. It is home to the University of South Daytona and the Daytona Beach Convention Center. The first Europeans to visit what is now South Daytona were Spanish traders in 1565. The name "Volusia" means "voluntarily." In 1768, Spanish explorers named it San Salvador de las Brisas (Saint Salvator's Bay). In 1821, Jacksonville was founded by General James K. Polk as a waypoint for exploration into the Tampa Bay area. When he arrived in Jacksonville on December 12th, 1821 he found that there was no town or settlement near where he wanted to place his army base. He ordered Captain John Smith and Lieutenant William Hickey to explore what lay between him and Tampa Bay and they named their findings "Volusia." On January 3rd, 1822 Captain Smith reported back to Admiral Robert Easley that he had found an inhabited land east of Tampa Bay with a post office called "Volusia." On October 10th, 1829 Henry Flagler founded the city of Jacksonville on land which he acquired from James K Polk under the terms of the Treaty of Paris which ended the American Civil War. At this time Jacksonville had a population of only 3 people while Volusia County had a population of over 100 thousand people! The town developed quickly and soon became known as one of America's leading commercial centers due to its location at the crossroads of several important transportation routes including Railroad Street through downtown Jacksonville and US 1 north to St Augustine then south along State Road A1A until reaching US 1 again just west of downtown Volusia City limits in 1912! The success story for Jacksonville came about as a result of two key decisions made by Flagler himself – First, He decided not to build any more ports on Florida's Gulf Coast so that boats could access both international shipping lanes open at then-new Port Canaveral while also creating jobs inland; second he chose instead to focus on developing agriculture rather than shipbuilding or Tourism! After World War II ended with Japan's surrender following their atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th 1945, many Floridians looking to return home found their visas had been revoked so they could not enter Japan until 1949-1950 after passage of the Foreign Travelers' Entry into United States Act (FTA). This meant that almost all those who left for Japan during or immediately following World War II never returned home – some went on to create new businesses or become Hollywood celebrities like Mickey Rooney or Clark Gable while others simply faded into obscurity like local singer Ray Charles before his death in 1978 aged 86 at age 82 from leukemia at just south side beach retirement community called Coral Springs Park - also known then as "South Daytona". It wasn't until 1990 when laws changed allowing Japanese nationals living abroad with valid visas back into America once again that many people who had left during or after World War II decided they wanted to come home instead of fade away again like so many others before them – some returning even older than when they first left! On October 15, 1926, Daytona Beach became a town when it was incorporated by the General Assembly. The town was named for Admiral William H. Vanderbilt and his wife, Nellie C. Dayton. Daytona Beach is located on the Indian River Lagoon, which means that it had salt water in its groundwater before Europeans arrived. The first people to live in what is now Daytona Beach were sea captains and their crews who used the lagoon for fishing and swimming.
