South Daytona is a town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,787 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood AFP market area. As of 2017 it has the lowest median household income of any municipality in Brevard County. The town was founded by white refugees who left Mobile Alabama after the American Civil War to escape Jim Crow segregation laws and violence there. They named their new community for General Lucius Clay, an American general who had played a significant role in that conflict and later helped create what is now Alabama as a state. South Daytona’s history also includes its first African American resident – Leroy Greene – who worked as a labourer on local farms until he became successful enough to open his own grocery store in 1938. Many other early residents came from throughout Florida or from outside the U.S., including many Methodists and Baptists who built churches and homes in South Daytona during this time period (the town today has no black residents). During World War II, South Daytona saw an influx of servicemen with whom the town developed strong military ties. In 1942, General James Hogg established Camp Hogg (later renamed Fort Riley) on land now within the boundaries of South Daytona; this camp housed more than 1,500 soldiers during World War II and served as a training ground for future military leaders such as George Patton and Dwight Eisenhower. For many years afterwards, Fort Riley remained one ofBrevard County’s most popular tourist destinations thanks to its beautiful views over Volusia Bay—a favorite spot for swimming—and its unique historical context: One of only two camps authorized by Congress to be used exclusively for training troops during World War II. This designation also made Fort Riley one of just six units nationwide designated as “battlefields” by then-Defense Secretary Robert McNamara following Operation Overlord (the Normandy invasion). Today, Fort Riley remains home to several army garrison activities such as ceremonial guard duty at both Confederate Memorial Park (site where Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House) and nearby Veterans Memorial Cemetery; it also serves as an interpretive center for local school kids about military history topics related to Operation Overlord/Vietnam War era events thereabouts (e.g., how artillery fire caused widespread destruction among residential neighborhoods near Iwo Jima during Battle of Okinawa). It should be noted that while much has changed since WWII when Camp Hogg operated here—most notably with respect to demographics), certain aspects have not - largely due to either noise generated by active Army garrison activities or vehicular traffic patterns which make travelling through downtown SB difficult even for locals without special transportation capabilities! In recent decades some have called for revocation or diminishment of Army Garrison activities at present day Ft Riley due primarilyto safety concerns brought about increased nighttime crimeensity along portions adjacent SR 711 & HWY 441 particularly around intersectionVeterans Memorial Cemetery & GI Barracks unit park... Notwithstanding this growing chorus againstArmyGarrisonActivitiesAtFtRiley currently taking place within city limitsI remain hopeful thatfuture decisions RegardingThisIssues WILLBe Made IN ACCORDANCE WITH REASONABLE SAFETY CONCERNS PRESENTLY FACING THE CITY OF SOUTH BENDALA
