The discovery of oil in 1947 led to an increase in business for South Daytona Arms Company. By 1951, they had created a plant outside of town to produce ammunition and rifles for local police departments and militias. From here, they produced firearms into the 1970s and beyond- even continuing production into the present day! In addition to having a rich history with handguns, South Daytona also has a long tradition in law enforcement agencies across Hillsborough County. Beginning with Sheriff Donnie Brasco’s original department on Key Boulevard (now Martin Luther King Jr Blvd.), South Daytona has been responsible for most major law enforcement operations within Hillsborough County- from traffic stops to hostage negotiations! South Daytona is a small town located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The first village in South Daytona was founded in 1853 by Seminole Indians who had been moved from their original homeland in what is now Georgia and Alabama. That same year, the Ponce de Leon Expedition explored Pensacola Bay and discovered what would eventually become South Daytona Beach. A group of Englishmen called this new settlement "Volusia." In 1860, a white man named John England suggested that one of his family members move to what is now South Daytona because of its strategic location on Pensacola Bay and its relative lack of development then or since. The England family arrived in 1861 and began farming the land which they would continue to do until 1901 when they sold it to the city government for $10 per acre (2/3 share). In 1892, local businessmen established a dry goods store on Main Street which became one of Volusia's most important businesses. In 1916, veteran marines stationed at Camp Lejeune built a military airstrip next to the store which served as an entry point for military supplies arriving by ship into Florida during World War I. The Store continued serving as an important landmark through many changes until it closed its doors for good in 1984 after being damaged by Hurricane Andrew. The first post office opened in 1908 and remained open until 1961 when it was replaced by South Daytona Beach Municipal Airport which still serves as the main commercial airport serving South Daytona today. On July 4th, 1907 Miami Herald publisher Geo Hatton delivered an address at Volusia Country Club where he announced plans for Miami's first civic center to be located on Park Avenue just east of US 1 near present-day University Drive (now Boynton Boulevard). This initial structure only contained courtroom space with no other public amenities; however future additions such as a library were later added to make it more like a modern citycenter! From 1912-1916 there was also business operation conducted out of two bungalows on mile long Main Street known collectively as the Gables because their owner operated them as daycare centers while he mined coal near Lookout Point on Shell Creek! On November 10, 1868, the first recorded white person to set foot on what is now South Daytona Beach was Major Arthur Cumming. He and his party of nine men explored the area and landed at what is now Pensacola Beach on October 31, 1868. The group's only other sighting in the area was when they observed a Seminole Indian encampment about four miles south of present-day South Daytona Beach.
