This company manufactured ammunition for handguns and rifles across America as well as throughout Europe. In 1918, the United States entered World War I and production at the Winchester Ammunition Company ceased due to wartime restrictions on importing munitions from abroad. However, individual employees continued producing ammunition for their own use until 1919 when production resumed under new ownership with a new headquarters location at 627 North First Street in downtown South Daytona. From 1919-1922, Winchester Ammunition facility produced over 2 million rounds of ammunition per day! During World War II, Winchester Ammunition Company produced shells for both naval gunfire exercises off Florida's coast as well as bombsfor RAF Bomber Command (the RAF being one of the many air forces that engaged in WWII). In 1945, after years of restructuring following World War II, Winchester AmmunitionCompany merged with Remington Arms Corporation to form what is now known as Remington Arms Co., Ltd.. South Daytona is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood metropolitan area. South Daytona is located on the Gulf of Mexico and is bordered by Miami to the north, Biscayne Bay to the east, Everglades National Park to the south and Plantation Key to the west. The town began as an unincorporated community on November 10, 1892 when Dr. George Witherspoon organized a group of farmers seeking affordable land near what would eventually become downtown Miami. On May 6, 1896, South Daytona became its own municipality with incorporation under charter from then-Governor James Buchanan Hogg. In 1899 it annexed neighbouring tributaries of Lake Worth for $2 per acre ($ today). On December 1st 1906 South Daytona annexed Coconut Grove for $5 per acre ($ today) making it one of only two municipalities in Miami-Dade County with annexations not subject to referendum (the other being Dadeland). The annexation was prompted by concerns about encroachment by Coconut Grove's wealthy landowners onto undeveloped land in what would become downtown South Daytona. In 1912 construction began on what would soon be known as "The Big House" – later renamed "The Volstead Hotel". The building housed both business and social functions until 1949 when it became a shelter for displaced Hurricane Connie residents following their evacuation from North Florida during that storm. Throughout much of this period though, dairy products were also often produced here due to Southwest Florida’s high humidity levels at that time (which still exist today). Additionally, many notable buildings that remain standing in downtown include The Masonic Temple (founded in 1868), The University Clubhouse (built in 1919), The African American Baptist Church (built 1903), and The Old State House (dedicated to former Governor Jeptha Hines)).
The area now known as South Daytona was first inhabited by the Timucua. The Seminole people arrived in this area in the early 1800s, and they eventually displaced the Timucua. The county was created in 1868, and it is currently composed of Volusia County and Brevard County. In 1916, Florida statehood occurred, and South Daytona became part of the newly created Florida State Senate District 4. On November 6, 2000, South Daytona residents approved a referendum to secede from Volusia County and become an independent municipality. The secession proposal was rejected by voters on December 12th.
