On January 6th 1912 WF Goodrich opened a grocery and feed store at Main Street and Second Avenue which became the first drugstore in the community In 1916 local citizens organized an election to select trustees for the new city of Daytona Beach which would be incorporated into Volusia County when it was created. In 1928 Gertrude Himmelman donated land east of Third Street north of retention pond for what would become South Daytona Day School which continues today as one of the most important services provided by this community On February 26th 1959 residents of South Daytona voted to annex neighboring unincorporated territory east of Third Street including present-day Cocoa Beach to form Volusia County .
