South Daytona, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Volusia County, Florida. The population was 2,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Lake Buena Vista Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Daytona is a small town with a population of under 10,000 people and it has no city status or charter. The roots of South Daytona are buried in history. In 1860, King Charles IV of Spain granted land to the citizens of Daytona for their common defense against Indians and pirates. The townsite was named for General James Hickey who fought on the American side in the Mexican-American War and received the Medal of Honor for his actions. The name "Daytona" stuck and today's residents are descendants of those who founded it. A post office called "Daytona" opened in 1892, and remained open until 1925. The first settler in what is now South Daytona was William Boynton who arrived around 1855 from Georgia with his family. He built a cabin on present day Airport Road and named it "Boynton's Cabin." By 1880, there were seven families living in what is now South Dayton Village; by 1890 there were twenty-four families living here including nine white men and eleven black women between them as well as six children born to these couples. The early days were difficult because there was little trade going on between Miami Beach/Orlando and Dayton village because both areas were farmed by Native Americans using slash-and-burn techniques which resulted in high levels of chemical exposure that caused reproductive problems among Indian women (Goudreau & Richardson 1978). However due to persistent efforts made by residents such as Drs John Ladd & Asa Griggs(Ladd) local schools began opening up during this time period which led to increased opportunities for local girls scouts group known as “The Ladies” that met at Mrs Ladd’s home each week to discuss girl Scouting program ideas or other important Girl Scout related topics (Goudreau 1984). These meetings helped introduce new girls into Scouting while also providing leadership opportunities for future leaders (Fowler 2009). In 1901 Volusia County formed a police department which moved into its current location on US 1st Street near Railroad Avenue when that route becameimproved Roads Actuated School District No 4 (Hodges 1954). In 1912 a post office opened at this location under name “Volusia” after county seat Jacksonville but changed hands three times before it closed permanently on October 17th 1917 (Fowler 1929). In 1930 Sanford Jakes bought 8 lots adjoining Dairy Queen lot from Wm Boynton giving him an area larger than any he had ever seen before creating today’s south end zone subdivision east off I-4 just west of Interstate 95 about 0 mile west from original site where Sanford lived until his death in 1981 age ninety five years old (Jakes papers #1018; Fowler Archives 1979; 2001 Census) . Jakes served two terms as Mayor pro tempore from 1951 through 1957 then became Deputy Sheriff during 1958 – 1959 terms before retiring effective December 31st 1959 after serving one term unexpired term effective January 1st 1960 becoming eligible for re election if no successor could be found due to state law change allowing incumbent mayors full four year terms without being ineligible should they choose not to serve again . After leaving politics he resided at home until his death February 26th 1977 aged eighty four years old.(Jakes papers #1016) A few miles north along I-4 near exit 232 lies another former Jakes property still used for farming purposes Namely 3 lots formerly occupied by Parsonage Home Farmstead LLC later known as Darebin Farms LLC used since 2003 by Royce Halliburton Jr., son apparent decedent stated owner.) After the war ended, Plantation Key reverted back to its original status as a single-family home community with no commercial development taking place until after hurricane Irma struck in September 2017 making it one of the most impacted communities in that time period.
