South Daytona, Florida is a town located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,032 at the 2010 census. The town of South Daytona was founded in 1892 by white settlers who came from Georgia and built a small community on the now-abandoned Indianola Plantation southeast of present-day Daytona Beach. The first post office in the town was established in 1895. South Dayton City was organized as a city on December 6, 1907. On November 1, 1912, the name of the town was changed to South Daytona because of local support for changing its name to coincide with that of nearby Daytona Beach which had become an all-"black" city after annexation by Jupiter in 1911. The primary industries in early days were agriculture and fishing; however, since World War II industrial development has shifted most prominently to manufacturing including rubber products and appliance manufacturing. In recent decades other economic activities have included healthcare and retail operations (particularly along Main Street). On February 17, 1959 – seven years after it became part of statehood – South Daytona incorporated as a university city under Act No. 5277 and received its charter from Govt. Bill Clements on May 4th 1959 This allowed for more than just academic research and study at South Daytona but also for commercial ventures such as hotels/motels/restaurants/etc., making it one of only two university cities statewide at that time . Development continued apace through 1972 when Act No. 6875 created new powers for city government with respect to land use within limits set forth therein; this led to increased redevelopment around University Boulevard where today’s businesses can be found: Albertsons Pharmacy (since 1967), GameStop(since 1987), Dunkin’ Donuts(since 1990), Subway sandwich shop (opened 1997) . Today’s downtown skyline is home to several high-end restaurants as well as multiple non-profit organizations such as Chamber Music Hall & Performing Arts Center which hosts various performances throughout the year Accordingly , many aspects endure unchanged from when founded until our current day: segregated schools districts including Easley Elementary School District #2 east of Main Street continue westward into what is now occupied by Canton Middle School Building ; large African American population including numerous pastors who ministered here during segregation era ; ongoing efforts made by citizens & elected officials alike both past & present (especially Mayor Tom Richards ) towards comprehensive planning / revitalization / enhancement - something palpably evident every time you walk or bike through town center or main street - something that truly makes us Coastal
South Daytona is a town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Daytona Beach metropolitan area. The first settlers in South Daytona were Dutch people who arrived in 1668. The town was named after South Daytona Island in the St Lucie Sound, where they built their first house. They sold the island to Englishmen in 1730 and it remained under English control until 1814 when it became part of Spanish Florida. In 1815, American soldiers burned down the Spanish Fort on South Daytona Island and renamed it Jacksonville for General James K. Polk during his military campaigns against Mexico throughout that year. The fort served as a depot for supplies coming into Jacksonville from Mobile Bay and was also used by U.S. forces during the Seminole Wars (1835-1845). In 1880, two brothers named Harry and John Witherspoon opened a grocery store on State Road A1A which would become one of South Daytona's most prominent businesses over the years. The store closed its doors in 1984 but is still standing as a historic landmark today with its own parking lot next to its building. In 1984, south Daytona also saw its first professional baseball game when Miami (Florida) Marlins pitcher Danny O'Connor faced off against Plant City Pirates starter Don Sutton at home plate in front of 7,000 fans at Joe Robbie Stadium on Flagler Beach Boulevard near Ponce de Leon Avenue NW., becoming one of only three games ever played outdoors at that stadium; other games played there include college football matchups between USF and FIU (1964), NFL games between Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins (1995),and major league baseball games including Opening Day 2004 performances by the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox (2002). It wasn't until 2006 when professional ice hockey began play within city limits when then-Mayor Rick Singer announced plans to build an arena specifically for this sport inside city limits adjacent to Town Hall which would eventually be known as "The Ice Arena". This project stalled however due to lack of finances but Mayor Singer has since resurrected it with help from private investors through partnerships such as Landmark Sports & Entertainment which will manage and operate The Ice Arena while local government retains control over all aspects including zoning/land use/ infrastructure development etc.. currentlydevelopment phase includes electric vehicles charging stations throughout downtown core
