South Daytona, Florida is a small town located in Lee County, Florida. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. South Daytona was founded in 1892 and has been the community of choice for people living near the Indian River Lagoon. The town's unique history includes being one of only a few communities in American Samoa to remain unincorporated after it became part of the United States in 1959. The first mention of south Daytona is from 1668 when Captain John Smith discovered what he thought were two islands off the coast of South America. He named them "Island I" and "Island II". In 1776 British forces under General George Washington landed at Cape Canaveral on Islet I and began their siege of Savannah, Georgia. However, they were unable to take Savannah because Admiral James Cook's squadron blockaded their approach from behind Cape Canaveral. On July 5th, 1776 General Washington detached his army from Savannah and sailed back towards Charleston with Lt.-Gen Sir William Howe leading the way. They reached Charleston on July 11th but had to turn around due to lack of food and supplies reaching them from England. On August 3rd, 1776 General Washington took possession of Fort Moultrie (later Fort Niagara) on Stono Island in order to protect English shipping passing through Savannah Harbor. French forces under Louis XV scheduled to sail through Savannah did not arrive until September 10th so they were able to capture Fort Moultrie without facing any obstacle by October 8th which gave rise to rumors that France had attacked south Florida as part of an effort by Spain to gain control over American trade routes between Europe and Asia-Pacific waters-. This led then-Governor James Kenedy Jr., who served during George Washington's presidency (1789-97)to request Congress authorize surveyors acting under orders from Secretary Anthony Ashleyto purchase land east of Stono Island for $5 per acre which would become south Daytona Township.. On December 12th, 1787 Governor Kenedy submitted his petition for township status with Assemblyman Thomas Pritchard as its first councilman On January 7th, 1800 Samuel White organized a company called Horse Guards Regiment composed mostly Irish Americans who fought alongside Ulysses S Grant during the Mexican–American War against Mexicaans commanded by Santa Anna before finally dying at Chapultepec de Guerrero on April 19st 1847 while trying escape Commands flagship USS Constitution (1805). This event is also considered legal beginning with Santa Anna’s death as Mexico ceded California peacefully ending overrunning Texas province including Austin whose capital city ordinance stated “All men are created equal regardless of race or color” effectively giving all Texans refuge within Mexico City despite Spanish efforts throughout much Texas ethnically cleansing such happenings.). South Daytona is a town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "South Daytona" comes from DeSoto's Warpath Expedition in 1834 and refers to a saltwater creek that ran through the town. The expedition was led by General John C. Smith and his men after they defeated a Seminole Indian force at what is now mile marker 16 on US Highway 1 (now State Road 6). DeSoto named the creek after himself, which may have been because he found it convenient to travel along its banks during his military campaigns in Florida. In 1881, South Daytona was incorporated as a village and became an unincorporated community when it lost its city status due to lack of annexations from other towns in Brevard County. It re-emerged as an incorporated town in 1911 when it annexed land from neighboring Stonington and became one of the first towns in Brevard County to have its own police department. In 1951, South Daytona merged with neighbouring Stonington to form the new city of Stonington–South Daytona. The merger caused some controversy because South Daytona had always been considered an unofficial municipality within Stonington while the new city had all legal rights and privileges withinBrevard Countysystems administrative boundaries On July 12, 2009, South Daytona voters passed a referendum asking for annexation by Kissimmee into the newly formed City of Kissimmee – resulting in their incorporation into that city effective January 1st 2010
