South Daytona was established on December 15, 1892 by citizens of Daytona Beach and Indian River Beach who voted to incorporate as a town. The name "Volusia" originates from the word "vole" which means "to lie down." In 1905, the town applied for incorporation under the name of "Daytona Beach". When it was determined that Daytona Beach had more residents and businesses, South Daytona went ahead with its own application and received charter on January 1, 1906. On July 4th 1928, a fire destroyed much of downtown South Daytona when an unknown person set a building on fire with?a gasoline bomb. In 1941-1942 during World War II, local veterans played an important role in helping to build airfields throughout southern Florida while their services were needed elsewhere. On October 12th 1942 local patriots - men and women from all over south central Florida - gathered at Kennedy Park in front of City Hall to plant Liberty Tree (Liberty Pole). This tree became a symbol of freedom throughout southcentral Florida because it was not taken down after World War II until 1969 when political correctness prevailed again over history!
South Daytona was first settled by English colonists in the early 1800s. The area was part of Spanish Florida before being transferred to American control in 1821. In 1836, the area became part of the Seminole Nation and was used as a military stronghold during the Indian Wars. After the war, South Daytona became a thriving community with a large population of white residents and Native Americans. In 1865, South Daytona was renamed for General John J. Fenton following his victory over Confederate forces at Battle of Fort Donelson. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size by 1940 when it had a population of 30,000 people.
