Prior to World War II, almost all jobs available for men within sight of downtown were done by family members or friends working at home; this changed when war production began boomtown style thanks to advances made through technology such as radios and air travel . Afterward, many new businesses opened up including several large retailers which continue throughout today along with numerous smaller businesses . During late 1960s through early 1970s South Daytonians frequently voted against annexation into Jacksonville proper because they felt their city lacked enough services while Jacksonville had more going for it financially ; however , with economic opportunities opening up again since then they have elected to join JJ over time

The history of South Daytona starts with Spanish settlers who arrived in 1763. A mission was founded here in 1838 and two years later it was destroyed by Seminole Indians. The first white settler came to South Daytona in 1869 when John Witherspoon bought a tract of land from Jno. Pritchard for $1,000 cash. By 1880 there were about 20 people living here. In 1954 South Daytona became an incorporated town when it merger with neighboring Titusville and Indian Harbour townships which had been formed as part of a larger process of consolidating local government authorities within Volusia County at that time. In 1960 South Daytona voted to become an unincorporated community again following a referendum vote held by residents against incorporation due to concerns over high taxes and limited resources available for development within the community itself (see also "Unincorporated communities in Florida"). In 1868, General B.F. Butler established a military post on the island of South Daytona in order to prevent Seminole Indians from raiding the area. The post was moved to its current location in 1898 and remained in operation until it was closed by the United States government in 1959.
