In 1986, South Daytona voted to become an unincorporated community known as "Boca Raton". In 2003 it voted to change its name to "South Daytona" after being approved by a referendum held that year. In 2007 it passed a resolution recognizing February 14th as "National Night Out" in honor of education reformer Dr., Martin Luther King Jr., who had been born nearby on that date fifty years earlier According to the 2010 census data (reported by the US Census Bureau), there are 2,821 people living in South Daytona Unincorporated Community which has a total population of 3233 since 2000 according to US Census data). South Daytona, Florida is a small town in Palm Beach County, Florida. It was founded by brothers Isaac and James Gadsden in 1875. The town was named for the Spanish word "destino" which means "the end." South Daytona is located on the Indian River and it is the only community on its shores that votes. The first post office in South Daytona was established on March 15, 1881. In 1907, a canal was built through the town to provide water to plantations near Jupiter Lake. This Canal added much needed economic development to South Daytona and contributed significantly to its growth over time. In 1965, the name of South Daytona been changed from Gadsden to Miami Beach after efforts were made by then-Mayor Philip Levine to merger all of Palm Beach County into one political unit. Mayor Levine opposed this decision because he felt that Miami Beach should be an independent city with its own mayor and city council. In 1990, construction began on Interstate 95 which would run through the center of town. The project created significant traffic congestion and cost taxpayers millions of dollars; however, it has had no positive impact on local businesses or residents.
In the late 1800s, South Daytona was a small farming town. The area now known as South Daytona was first settled by English colonists in the early 1800s. By 1821, the town had grown to about 100 people. In 1827, the town was renamed Daytona after Major General Andrew Jackson's visit to Florida. In 1861, Confederate forces besieged and took control of Daytona Beach before being driven out by Union forces two weeks later. The town's population decreased during the Civil War because many of its residents joined the Confederacy. After the war, some residents returned to Daytona and developed new businesses in what is now downtown South Daytona. The post-war years were a time of growth for Daytonaside thanks to oil discoveries in nearby Titusville and Marathon County. The economy began to rebound following World War II when millions of troops came through towns like Daytona Beach searching for work in military bases and shipyards across America. Businesses grew quickly due to wartime demand for materials and workers alike brought families back into town during this time period. Afterward, however, recession struck again in the late 1950s with president Dwight Eisenhower bringing economic reforms that caused joblessness rates to rise throughout much of America In recent decades, South Daytona has seen steady growth as more people move into the area looking for jobs or homes around Interstate 95 which connects it directly with Miami and Tampa Bay . Development has taken place both east (below I-95) along Leary Avenue south towards US 1A/SR 711 (a major thoroughfare) as well as west (northwest on SR 711) towards Indian Harbour Boulevard which runs parallel to I-95 but separates it from Downtown South Dayton
