South Daytona is a city in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 14,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Marquette metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in what is now South Daytona were some of the Seminole Indians who had been living there for centuries before being pushed out by American colonists in 1835. A post office called "Lenoir" was established in 1839, and became a town on January 3, 1840. In 1845 it became known as "South Daytona". In 1861 Confederate General Robert E Lee's army invaded Florida and burned all of Jacksonville including South Daytona; this event helped start the Second Seminole War which lasted until 1865. On February 17, 1912 an earthquake struck Volusia County with a magnitude of 5.2; its epicenter was located near mile marker 158 on U.S.-1 south of Yulee Boulevard (now State Road 7). The quake caused extensive damage to buildings and killed at least 22 people (twelve men and eight women) as well as injuring more than 100 people primarily furniture dealers and several other businesses within blocks of the epicenter. The total cost to repair damages from that day until December 1914 was $24 million dollars ($ million today). On October 15, 1922 South Daytona residents voted to secede from Volusia County because they felt their taxes were not fair nor did they get what they wanted from county officials such as land development or services like watermain replacement/repair etc... This event started the Third Seminole War which lasted until 1945 when both Seminole Wars ended with an agreement between America andthe Sanford Brothers who acquired most of what is now South Daytona Island
