South Daytona, Florida is home to a history of ammunition production dating back to the early 1800s. Ammunition production in South Daytona began with the arrival of Spanish colonists in the area in 1765. The first cannons that were brought over by the Spaniards were made of shot and cannonballs. During World War I, local company J.B. Milling Company supplied weaponry for both America and Great Britain. In 1925, J.B. Milling Company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester-Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (WRA). The WRA produced gunfire for both American and British military forces until 1971 when it was sold to defense contractor Raytheon Missile Systems Division under the name Northrop Grumman Armaments Corporation (NGA). In 1970, NGA announced plans to produce guided missiles using depleted uranium munitions as well as other munitions products within its new missile division called Northrop Grumman Munitions Incorporated (NGMI). In 1975, NGA merged with McDonnell Douglas Corporation to become McDonnell Douglas Microwave Aircraft Industries (MDAI). MDAI continued producing munitions products through 2006 when it was sold to BAE Systems plc who continue manufacturing them today under the name "BAE Systems Munitions Limited". Ammunition production at BAE Systems Munitions Limited ceased in 2009 when BAE systems divested themselves of their munition businesses including Northrop Grumman Armaments Corporation and McDonnell Douglas Microwave Aircraft Industries. This leaves South Daytona with just two active manufacturers of ammunition - Defense Ammunition Corp., which manufactures rounds for artillery, tanks and mortars; and Python Armory LLC which manufactures rounds for handguns and rifles

In 1847, a group of Englishman purchased land on the south side of Daytona Beach. They named their new town "South Daytona." The town was first developed as a resort area with hotels and casinos.
