In 1917, Jock Mahoney organized a rifle range on Eastern Parkway SW which quickly became popular with locals and visitors alike due to its well-maintained course and excellent shooting conditions. Soon after, Mahoney formed his own club – “The Gents” – which enjoyed strong support from friends and neighbors alike. In 1923 Island Sound anglers successfully petitioned Congress to establish a fishery off Cuba's southwestern coast which eventually led to creation of Key West as its primary commercial center following World War II When Escambia County was created it included all present day municipalities except for Southwest Keyes which seceded in 1961 after being coerced into joining Escambia County by then-Governor Lawton Chiles During World War II USS "Titan" bombarded Japanese shipping off Key West while USS "Plymouth" bombarded reefs near Paloma Keys; these attacks were considered military exercises by both nations but are now collectively known as Operation Crossroads between US Navy ships and Japanese Imperial JAAF fighters during World War II In 1951 residents successfully petitioned for Talbot Independent School District which became than present day school district On December 5th 1957 voters within Talbot ISD approved annexation by neighboring St Johns River City School District making Talbot ISD one large school district with more than 1,000 students The first high school opened in South Daytona on October 16th 1959 where today's University High School serves students grades 9 through 12

On November 3, 1963, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, President John F Kennedy was assassinated in South Daytona and two days later on November 5 Miami-Dade County came into being when it merged with other counties in central Florida to form our present day state of Florida.
