Seminole is a city in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. On December 1st of that year, Agricultural and Mechanical College (now University) started classes here too! Seminole, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,878 at the 2010 census. Seminole was founded on November 3, 1838 by Captain John Smith and his party of settlers from New England as a stop on their trip to what is now Tampa Bay. It became an independent Republic in 1845 after Mexico ceded sovereignty to America. On December 12, 1896, Seminole voted to secede from the United States and become an independent state called "Seminole State." The U.S. military occupied it during World War II; however, they left after the war ended. In 1959 Seminole re-joined Miami-Dade County and has since grown economically and culturally while remaining politically separate from other parts of Miami-Dade County.
The Seminole people were a Native American people who lived in present-day Seminole County, Florida. The first European to sight the Seminoles was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1565, when he sailed into what is now Tampa Bay on his 300-ton caravel Santa Maria della Pietà. From this sighting, the Spanish began speculation that they might be Indians and landed forces seeking to verify this belief traveled through the area in search of potential Indian allies. In 1692, after more than two years of failed negotiations with the local chief, Quemado tried to open hostilities against Spain by raiding Spanish settlements along the Gulf Coast. A small force led by Captain John Smith defeated him at Wacoaligo Creek outside St Petersburg on April 6, 1737. The Treaty of Paris ceded all of Florida to Spain and forced the tribe's relocation from its traditional homeland near Lake Tocantins in northcentral Brazil.
