Seminole is an unincorporated community in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2000 census. Seminole is located on U.S. 1 south of its junction with State Road 441 (SR-441). The first settler in what is now Seminole was Nicholas Sims in 1827. In 1855, the Fort Union Treaty ceded land to the United States in exchange for Indian removal acts being passed by Congress. The town of Sanford was founded nearby on a tract of land acquired from the Seminoles in 1861 and it became known as Sanford after General James Eagan's headquarters were established there during that year's American Civil War Campaign against Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell. A post office called "Seminole" was established at this site in 1874, and remained in operation until 1907 when it moved to Marianna; it reopened at Seminole on February 5, 1909. The community attained village status in 1907 and voters approved incorporation on November 3 that year by a vote of 7–1%. The name "Seminole" came from a word used by early residents: "semina", meaning "seed." In 1959, phosphate rock production began near Lake Worth which led to increased traffic onto SR-441 and parking problems downtown due to overflow crowds at local shopping malls; this caused the development of Seminole Village subdivision close to SR-441 about northeast of town center which became known as Forterra Park after Forterra Industries Inc., one of several developers who took advantage of phosphate mining activity around the area beginning around that time. The last major phase of development occurred between 1967 and 1971 when an airport runway opened within walking distance of downtown while other commercial developments grew up around it including two hospitals - Lone Star Medical Center (now Baptist Health) northwest across US 1 from downtown and St Petersburg Regional Hospital (now Children's Healthcare Tampa) southeast across I-75 from towncenter just outside current day Seminole Village boundaries although both facilities remain open today as outpatient clinics providing care for many residents with various medical issues ranging from childbirth through cancer treatment; also present during this time period were new schools - Doane School District #2A built east off US 1 adjacent to St Petersburg Regional Hospital; New Smyrna Beach High School (now Booker T Washington High School) southwest off US 1 next door to Children's Healthcare Tampa complex which opened their doors September 6th1967 ( opening day ), completion date coinciding with same week that Florida Gov . Lawton Chiles took office following general election victory over incumbent Dixiecrat Al Lawson ; developer Al Lingle had already purchased most or all acreage surrounding airport property prior to taking office making him oneOf only two men ever elected statewide twice In Palm Beach County - both before retiring age 70 ½ years later

After Indian Removal, the town developed as a slave-based cotton plantation society. In 1938, the town became a U.S. post office with its current name. As popular tourist destinations, Gainesville and Sanford are both close by; however, Gainesville is more developed and has more nightlife options than Sanford does. The Seminole Tribe of Florida (Tribe name: Seminole) were an indigenous tribe who resided in modern-day Seminole County, Florida. The tribe was first mentioned by Spanish explorers in the 16th century as the "Pinellas", and they may have been earlier known as the "Coconino". In 1821, when Congress created Seminole Nation Territory and established boundaries for that area, the tribe was not included. The tribe's initial territory encompassed parts of today's Lee and Muskegon counties. The tribe was forced to relocate to Georgia after a US military campaign against them in 1835. They were finally allowed back into Florida in 1898 following the end of World War I. In 1907, white settlers from Georgia alleged that Chief Osceola had¶ stolen 10 cattle from their farmstead near Worthboro on July 14, 1906. A posse composed of sheriff deputies, state troopers, riflemen with revolvers at hand and two machine guns patrolled near Worthboro while Native Americans collected evidence about what had happened; Chief Osceola purportedly offered no resistance when questioned by authorities about what he could have done with the animals if they had not been captured. Charges against him were never prosecuted because he disclaimed any knowledge of the theft and refused to answer further questions from investigators until his death in 1908. In 1924, white settlers surnamed Greene founded a town called West Palm Beach on Indian River Lagoon shoreline east of Jupiter Island after purchasing some land there from the Seminoles under a treaty negotiated between US President James KENNEDY and chiefs David Childress Sr., John Childress II and Isaac Watts Jr.. On November 15, 1926 White Sands Missile Range opened its gates on Singer Island off Jupiter Island providing employment for local fishermen during launchings of both ICBM’s (the world’s first operational nuclear missiles)and SM-2 Missiles but also exposing residents living near missile range to potential harm or even death should one mistake be made during launches which would result in an alert being sent out over open radio frequency waves revealing our location……….
