Seminole, Florida is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. It is situated on the Seminole River, about 20 miles (32 km) south of downtown Tallahassee and 30 miles (48 km) east of Jacksonville. The population was 3,812 as of 2010 census. The earliest known inhabitants of the area now called Seminole were Native American tribe members who had been living in the area for centuries before that time. In 1827, Sanford Burt bought 1/4 acre (0.20 hectare) of land from David Levy for $2 US dollars. The community was named after General Andrew Jackson's father-in-law, Colonel James Wilkinson Seminole II. A two-story white cottonwood schoolhouse was built in 1828 and operated until 1829 when it burned down; the cornerstone still remains inside the building today. In 1835–36, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered and mapped much of southern Florida by sailing up the Gulf coast; he named this part "Seminole" after some Indian chiefs he encountered thereabouts. In 1840–41 Lieutenant James Kenedy explored and surveyed eastern Duval County within modern Seminole Territory; his report included a map which bear similarities to that published by Captain John Rodgers seven years earlier under similar circumstances about what became Jacksonville Landing on Jupiter's Bayou just east of present day Sanfordville Boulevard near Royal Palm Beach Boulevard on Old Plantation Road – both properties are now part of Fort Lauderdale city limits). On October 2nd, 1840 at 4 Pm., Captain Rodgers landed with his squadron including 49 men at Jacksonville Landing where they constructed their first fortifications around what is now known as Fort Lauderdale Beach before beginning their explorations across much of southeastern Florida including parts now within present day Tallahassee city limits and most notably within modern day Sanfordville township located on present day Disney Springs region along I-95 just northward from mile marker 24 on Uptown Parkway which became Everglades National Park effective November 15th 1966.) Seminole is a town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population as of the 2010 census was 10,752. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–uSarasota Metropolitan Statistical Area. Seminole's nickname "The Canaries" comes from its history of being a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1828, Ponce de Leon and his group discovered what would become Seminole Island while exploring the Florida Keys. When Spanish missionaries arrived in 1830 to convert the natives to Catholicism, they found many of these Indians living on what would become Sanford Manor (now Sanford). In 1835, with help from Captain John Cushing and members of the First Seminole War Company under Colonel James Wofford, Governor Manuel Miranda proposed that all Indian slaves be emancipated and brought to Florida so that they might better compete for jobs with white settlers. The proposal met with resistance from some Native Americans who saw this as an insult to their cultures and way of life. In 1836, after more than two years of debate and negotiation led by Governor Miranda and then-President Andrew Jackson, Tampa Bay became a state within the United States when it was admitted as part of Jacksonville Territory. Santa Fe Road – which connected Tampa with St Petersburg – became one of the first roads built in Florida; it later became US 1. This allowed white settlers access to trade goods with Mexico at an early time during colonial times through Tampa Bayou Soochowkkee (now Tampa Bay) and other channels. In 1840, following Indian Removal Act approved by Congress under President James Kountz Sr., most of present-day Seminole County including Sanford Manor were sold off to private owners alongwith much land eastward including what is now Lake Okeechobee National Wildlife Refuge On October 15th 1861 about 2200 militiamen loyal to Confederate General Robert E Lee attacked military stores at Fort Taylor near modern day Winter Park without cause or warning killing 9 soldiers government troops Captured 3 whites & 1 black man Lt Col William Tecumseh Sherman ordered his men not fire until order was given& Fired upon unarmed blacks trying to cross road White women & children were carried into fort where they were shot dead before reaching safety Black men were taken into custody but never charged
The Seminole Tribe of Florida was one of the original groups that settled in Florida. The tribe was founded in 1765 by Osceola, a Seminole chief. They were eventually forced out of their land by Spanish settlers and moved to Indian Territory. In 1821, they were again forcibly removed when the United States acquired Florida from Spain. The Seminoles continued to live among the Native Americans until they were finally expelled in 1838.
