Seminole is a small town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. Its nickname is "The Villages." Seminole was founded by English colonists as part of the Fort Brooke settlement on Inlet Key in 1824. The community was named after General James K. Polk and his wife Seminole (nee Choctaw) with whom he had an affair while she was still married to her first husband, Creek war chief Osceola. When Fort Brooke burned down in 1827 and all the colonists were deported except for some who took refuge among the Indians, most of those from Inlet Key converted to Christianity and settled on their present site. Seminole's early years were difficult; during one period of Spanish rule it served as a penal colony for Native Americans convicted of crimes against whites or taking property without consent from settlers or state officials. From 1836 until Indian removal began in 1840, Seminoles lived under military occupation by Mexican forces led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna; they also engaged in stealing horses and cattle from white farmers and settlers throughout what is now Hillsborough County when opportunity allowed. In 1861 Seminoles attacked two Union patrols near their reservation boundary; no one was killed but many men were captured and taken into Indian Territory where they would be worked off until 1865 when Florida became a Confederate state. Most of these captives were released but about 100–200 remained living there until 1898 when they finally moved out due to lack of food and other reasons including fear that white settlers would move into their territory if it remained uncivilized). The post office at Inlet Key continuedOperating under different name(s) until 1907 when it changed its name to Sanford which lasted through 1948 before being replaced by its current name; Seminole following instructions given by then-Governor Manuel Lecuyer who felt that "the old Sanford should not be renamed too often because people might get confused". The change came as a result of efforts made by Chamber Of Commerce member Averill Harriman who lobbied for the change on behalf of several residents including Mrs., Mabel Bogan (daughterOf Colonel John Bogan), widow Of Major Jno Pugh And Mrs., Gertrude Hockaday (widow OF Captains Hiram De Witt Harriman & Augustus Graham Hockaday). After Governor Harriman's death in 1951 local citizens voted overwhelmingly to keep the original name although local newspapers generally referred to them as "Seminole" beginning with the 1959 edition . On November 3rd 1957 voters approved a resolution which designated ""Seminole"" Island within Stokes Bayou Park adjacent To City Hall As Official Name Of The Village Of Sanford For All Intents And Purposes

Seminole is a town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Seminole County was Marco de la Vega, who landed on Pensacola Bay in 1559 on his exploration of the area for new land investment. Spanish traders and missionaries soon followed de la Vega's lead, founding missions and mission towns throughout present day Seminole County. The 18th century saw a series of large improvements to this region by British settlers who founded Fort Brooke near modern Tampa in 1763 as part of the Indian Removal effort. In 1821, Seminoles ceded this territory east of Hillsborough River to the United States government as part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Civil War. In 1861, after Confederate forces sacked Fort Brooke during the American Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant ordered General George Pickett to bombard and burn all remaining Confederate positions in central Florida. As a result of this event known as "Pickett's Charge," more than 150 buildings were destroyed or damaged in what is now Seminole County; including many Mission Revival style residences that still stand today. An Intensive Plantation Development Program led by citrus magnate J P Morgan began development around both Tampa and Sanford during World War II with an eye towards creating thousands of jobs across two key industries: munitions production and aviation manufacturing; but it failed to materialize due to poor planning and Implementation issues which continue to be faced by local governments today."
On November 15, 1775, following the Battle of Bunker Hill in Massachusetts, the Seminole people rebelled against English rule and attacked a British military convoy. The rebels were led by Chief Osceola and two other chiefs. The British army was able to return to Fort Mims after a arduous battle, but they were forced to evacuate all their prisoners when the Spanish arrived in force. In 1821, Florida was admitted as part of the United States.
