Seminole, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Volusia County, Florida, United States. It lies along State Road 8 between Sanford and Fort Myers. The population was 5,890 at the 2000 census. Seminole was named after a Seminole chief. The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish soldiers under Lieutenant Alonso de Montoya y Costilla on October 25, 1539. A local Indian chief had alerted them of Spanish presence and they arrived too late to do much damage before leaving without plundering or killed any natives. A group of Muscogee Indians from Georgia came through the area in 1763 and camped near present-day Seminole for several days before moving on northward. In 1821, a party of three white men – Daniel O'Connell, James Kenedy and John Fenton – set out from Jacksonville for what would be their final attempt to cross the Stono River into Alabama but stopped near Seminole because of bad weather conditions at Tampa Bay. In 1834–35 Colonel Arthur Stoneman explored the area around Seminole while serving as military governor of adjacent Choctaw Nation Territory; he found it unsuitable for settlement because its soils were too sandy and its climate too hot for agriculture or stock raising but recommended that it be annexed by Florida as part of his proposed state constitution which passed with little opposition but no land grants to settlers being made until after World War II when statehood was granted to Florida in 1959. In 1892–93 Alexander Silliphant surveyed an improved road from Sanford across Trinity River (now State Road 8) via Pensacola Bayou to springs near present-day Pahokee; he named this route "Silliphant Trail". The main business district now called downtown Seminole began developing around this intersection about 1895 when two stores opened up: Wahoo's Tavern on current US 41st Street corner Government House Place and Laundromat No. 3 on what is now First Avenue North; other early businesses included The Grocery Emporium (later Mrs Howell's), Flora's grocery store (now defunct), Mr & Mrs Gannon's barbershop/dentist office/photography shop (later renamed Angela's Clothing Store), Jakes Hardware store (now closed) and Post Office building (now Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department headquarters). A small cotton plantation known as White Sands Plantation east of town also grew during this time period although records indicate only five acres were ever used for cultivation.. In 1903 the Atlantics Electric Railway Company built a line northwest from Sanford along government property then eaststd into town thence northeast overland past today’s Seminole Boulevard past Second Avenue North served as depot until electrification ended in 1939; passenger service ended there about 1940 Amtrak discontinued operations there about 1971 TodaySeminoles Downtown Historic District offers exhibits including postcards, photographs,Original items dating back to 1896

The Seminole Tribe of Florida was one of the most powerful and influential Native American tribes in North America. The tribe had its roots in what is now the state of Florida, but moved to Alabama in the 17th century. They were expelled from Cuba by Spanish settlers in 1565, and began a period of expansion that would see them occupy much of North America. In 1627, they acquired land east of Tampa Bay from the Timucua Indians. The tribe’s territory expanded rapidly as they adopted a form of tribal government that allowed female leaders and enslaved people to participate in decision-making. Seminoles also developed an important trade network withNative American tribes along the Gulf Coast. After Removal (the British taking over administration of Florida) in 1835, many Seminoles became refugees or emigrated to Mexico and Central America. A few returned to Florida after brief periods living among their original Indian neighbors. By 1845, only about 500 Seminoles remained living scattered around central Florida and southern Georgia. However, their influence continued to be felt throughout this region until after World War II when contact between Indian nations ended abruptly with no traditional Creek or Seminole communities remaining on either side of the line that separates Indian country from federal property
