Seminole, Florida was founded in 1835 by Colonel James A. Fox and the Seminole people. The area became part of the United States in 1898 after the Spanish-American War.

Seminole is a small, isolated town in southeastern Florida. Seminole's population numbered just 541 as of the 2010 census, but it has been growing rapidly over the past few decades. The name Seminole comes from the Choctaw word "sinkin" which means 'to inhabit or live in.' In 1834, white settlers founded a trading post on the banks of the Suwannee River near what is now Sanford. They named their new settlement after General Andrew Jackson, who had helped lead America through its expansion into Mexico and Cuba. The post was abandoned in 1835 and never regained significance. Over time, however, Seminole's reputation for being an interesting and vibrant community grew. By 1850, Seminole had become a prosperous farming center with a population of 2,500 people. Many residents were involved in local politics and businesses. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down much of Sanford to prevent Union troops from landing at its docks to reinforce their battlefronts north of Tampa Bay. During Reconstruction following World War II (1946-1949), many African Americans came to work in local businesses and farms; this increased racial integration in Florida during this period. By 1960, there were only 350 residents living within Seminole proper; by 2000 that number had quadrupled to 1,100 people. As part of efforts to revitalize downtown Sanford - home to some of Florida's most notable shopping districts - town leaders began developing plans for what would become Seminole Park Place., which would include a large open-air mall and several million square feet (100 hectares) of commercial space across twelve blocks bordered by First Street on one side and US Highway 98 on the other. The park was completed in 2003 and has since become one of Sanford's most popular tourist destinations; it also features several state-of-the-art amusement parks including Universal Studios Orlando Resort on one side demolished in 2006 for redevelopment as The Villages theme park with 3D rides,, movie theaters,, more than 300 shops including locally owned stores,, 12 restaurantsincluding two chain restaurants,, three golf courses,, four tennis courts,, two waterfallsand even an air conditioning plant!
