In 1821, when Florida acquired its statehood as the US state of Florida, SaintGeorge's Parish was transferred to Seminole County. In 1839, Colonel Jno. Fisk erected a white cotton gin and mill near what is now downtown Sanford that became one of the largest cotton mills in America; it continued operation until 1903. At that time it employed over 1,000 workers including women and children working between six p.m., Monday through Saturday to complete more than two hundred loads per day! In 1936 Coastal Construction Company began constructing Bayfront Drive which runs parallel to US-1 and forms much of the southern border with Seminole County before rejoining US-1 just north of downtown Sanford. The following year Bayfront Drive was widened into four lanes as part of a bond issue approved by voters; today it remains one continuous major artery linking Downtown Sanford with both eastern unincorporated parts of Seminole County as well as most all other southeastern counties within Florida! After years during which only minor improvements have been made to Bayfront Drive (including widened shoulders), those responsible for its resurfacing recently announced plans to add an express lane running perpendicular to I-4 Exit 229A/US-1 just eastbound exit ramp leading back into downtown Sanford! This would be an incredible addition not only for safety but also for economic development as motorists could easily bypass downtown if they so desired while bypassing much needed congestion on Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard & US 1! Unfortunately this project has yet again languished in bureaucratic limbo amidst various competing interests representing various government entities coming together to prioritize their own agendas rather than fulfilling their promises! Aided by lobbyists from both local businesses interested in increased traffic flows along I-4 Exit 229A/US-1 (and resultant economic development) as well as environmental groups concerned about increased noise levels from heavy trucks exiting & entering I 4) this project may yet become reality – but only if someone takes notice!
