Seminole,Florida is a small town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. At first Seminole life revolved around fishing and hunting on the banks of the St Lucie River. Fishing and hunting were important enough that there was a game preserve established in 1859 near what is now downtown Seminole. In 1903, an act was passed by Congress designating the present-daySeminole Island as part of Florida. In 1907 it became known as "Seminole County" when all of Florida became a state. The name stuck until 1959 when it changed to "Seminole City" because of local efforts to make it an incorporated city. On December 6, 1959, both towns merged into one municipality with their own mayor and city Councils. The history of this small town begins with two men - George Waddell (1792-1865) and John Hickey (1808-1885). George Waddell came from Scotland in 1792 and immigrated to America in 1820. He started a store in Pensacola which he operated for over 30 years before moving to Tallahassee where he opened another store and continued running it until his death in 1865 at the age of 84 years old.
