This order enraged many Native Americans who believed that it was an attack on their culture reminiscent of European colonialism. As a result, several large-scale demonstrations took place throughout Seminole territory against Kirby's orders until he finally resigned from his position five years later due to public outcry over his policies

The Seminole Tribe of Florida was an Indian tribe that resided in present-day Seminole County, Florida. The tribe was first mentioned in 1763 by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León when he named the area Tierra Firme after the Canarian Governor, Manuel Fernández de Ovando. In 1814, Captain James Fenton Permanent Party discovered a resource rich region in what is now Seminole County and offered to sell it to the Seminoles for $5,000. However, this offer was not accepted and no land was ever sold to the Tribe. Instead, the Tribe started hunting and fishing within their own boundaries. The first white settler in what is today Seminole County was George Rogers Clark who located a cabin on Georgia Creek near present-day Sanford on November 6th, 1838.
