Smith as Fort Brooke after he destroyed a Seminole village near Stonington, Connecticut; the town of Sanford emerged from Fort Brooke in 1841 as the capital of Seminole County and prospered as an agricultural center until 1907 when it lost its status as county seat to Tallahassee due to population growth within Miami County and annexation by Orlando. In 1907, all land withinSeminole limits became part of Miami County, but access to Lake Okeechobee for fishing, hunting and boating remained important to residents and businesses so the town kept its name until 1959 when it changed back to Seminole after becoming a state entity under Florida law. In 1960, during their campaign for governor (the first major political event in the new state), then-Gov.(now U.S.)douglas Hixon proposed annexingSeminole into Miami County; however opposition from local business owners—some of whom had long been dependent upon access to Lake Okeechobee—resulted in his veto of the measure and Hixon's re-election as governor that year with support from neighboring Palm Beach County before taking office again in 1966 as Ulysses S. Grant Wood Jr.'s Vice President

Seminole is a town in Sumter County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,872 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1827 by Major John L. Smith and his family as Fort Mims. It was named for the Seminoles who had recently been removed from their original homeland in Florida and were living in Georgia at the time of its incorporation. The first white settler to come to Seminole was David Barron, who arrived on July 10, 1828. Other early pioneers included Jno. Bigney and Sgt Jarvis Cain, both of whom came aboard the brig "Oconee". By 1830 most of what is now Seminole had been established including Fort Mims which became known as "the White House". In 1835 Captain James Cook landed on the island with HMS Beagle and reported that he had discovered land to the east of Tampa Bay called Inverness or possibly Fernandina or Callaway Island but no one has ever found Proof-of-Location for this claim other than what is given by Capt Cook himself which seems not to be true There are several stories about how this discovery may have happened; some say that Cook might have mistaken an uninhabited island for part of Tampa Bay because it looked like growth onshore could not be explained by natural causes only due to human intervention such as planting trees where there should not have been any evidence of growth; while others say that someone built a small fort on Inverness Peninsula (later known as Yacht Harbor) after hearing rumors about Spanish ships sailing into Tampa Bay without stopping so they could loot Native American belongings then sail away with whatever treasure they found before returning home undetected
