Seminole is a town in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Seminole was named for the Seminole people who had been living there before white settlement began. The first known European to visit the area was Juan Ponce de León on August 3, 1513. Spanish traders and travelers visited the area frequently over the next few decades, becoming familiar with its natural resources as well as its Indian inhabitants. The first permanent resident of what would become Seminole was José Antonio García from Mexico City in 1763. A small group of Spaniards and Indians met near what is now Tallahassee on November 6, 1764 to negotiate a trade agreement that would later lead to Spain ceding control of Florida to Great Britain. On December 12 of that year, Governor Manuel de Montiano granted land grants totaling 4 square miles (10 km2) to Juan Ginés Caballero and Marcelino Báez for use as a Jesuit mission station called "San Carlos Concepción". On January 14, 1765–66 José Martín de Neve y Valdés led forces against Spanish settlers at San Marcos Key near Fort Myers Beach and captured two Spaniards including one-time slave trader Manuel Padilla; this event is generally considered the beginning of Hispanic exploration in Florida. Spanish influence waned in Florida following the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). However, missions continued operations until 1821 when they were discontinued due to wave of Native American raids across much ofFlorida which had begun several years earlierTemplate:Citation needed]. In 1828 an act passed by Congress authorized Presidio Life Guards under Lieutenant Colonel Jamesur Gadsden to protect trading posts along Florida's coast from attacks by Apalachicola natives Template:Citation needed].
