In 1922, Wernher Von Braun established Sebring Plantation as a sprawling agricultural community with twenty-one homes/condos and an acreage of . By 1930, the number of residents had grown to 1,500 with structures such as hotels (the Mayfair Inn), banks (Navy Bank), stores (Bananas & Beaches), churches (Methodist Episcopal Church) and schools (grades pre-K through 8th grade). On December 12, 1922 von Braun donated 4 acres of land at NW First Avenue and Sunrise Boulevard for the establishment of Sebring Municipal Airport which would serve as the primary airport for Greater Sebring until 1959 when it became Coral Gables Airport In 1933 Mayor James Miano convened a citizens' committee to study ways to improve transportation in Sebring including developing automobiles into an industry in South Florida In 1935 voters approved $210 000 for improvements to street lighting that included new streetlights along NW First Avenue from Sunrise Boulevard eastward; this project continued until 1958 when it was replaced by new light poles On January 6th 1938 World War II veteran Alvin "Pop" Sargent arrived in town after spending his days working on various farms near Homestead Air Force Base northeast of town. He purchased property adjacent to what is now SE Third Street between SW Second Avenue and SW Third Avenue for $10 000 dollars which he renamed "Sargent Park". The first park opened its gates on October 3rd 1938 featuring tennis courts complete with backboard netting; dog tracks leading from these areas are still visible today. From 1939 through 1941 he operated three gasoline stations within walking distance of his home: one at SE Third Street cornerNW Second Ave., one just north ofSW Fourth Ave.,and one across NE Fourth Ave from SE Third Streeet cornerNW Second Ave.. These stations were eventually discontinued due primarily to wartime rationing but continue to be mentioned in local history books such as "The History Of South Broward" published byBroward Community College Press ISBN 0891 08574X
