Sebring, Florida is a small city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 985 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Ft. McLaughlin who arrived on December 12, 1836 with his family from Kentucky. He named his land "Southport" after his home town in England and it became an incorporated village in 1855. That year, Sebring had a population of just over 50 residents and by 1860 it had grown to more than 150 people due to waves of settlers coming for oil drilling operations around that time. In 1907, Sebring's post office opened and until 1959 it served as the only village within Palm Beach County without its own ZIP code – until they were combined into one entity when Broward County was created. In 1974, Rufus Key began development on what would become One BLDG (later known as One South Bank). At that time, there were no grocery stores or other businesses near downtown Sebring so he built a shopping center east of Interstate 95 instead which today provides much needed retail space for the city despite being abandoned for years due to lack of use or investment by developers. Sebring is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It was founded on November 15, 1893 by George Sebring and his wife Anna Maria. The Sebrings were the first white people to live in the area and they began farming land that now includes most of the town. In 1926, Sebring became part of the new Miami-Dade County. The first high school in Sebring was built in 1923 and attendance increased as students from nearby towns moved into the area for schools. In 1941, Sebring became one of only two communities in Miami-Dade County to be granted a fire department when it was created out of need following a coal mine explosion that killed several people and injured dozens more. The community's Volunteer Fire Department has been serving residents ever since. In 1966, construction started on what would become known as "The Mall", which would serve as the main shopping district for the town. The mall opened in 1973 and remains an important component of local economy today. It also contains several restaurants and stores including Sears, JCPenney, Macy's, and Kmart. In 2013, plans were made to demolish much of "The Mall" due to its age and lack of use; however this plan was met with resistance from residents who argue that it would lead to increased traffic congestion around the neighborhood already experiencing heavy traffic congestion thanks to other development projects being undertaken within walking distance of The Mall. As a result of these protests (and continued concerns over traffic management around The Mall), plans were scrapped for demolition altogether but instead allocated towards renovating/updating infrastructure within The Mall so that it can better serve as an open air marketplace used by locals and visitors alike for economic development purposes rather than simply function as an enclosed shopping mallCurrent state: Renovations are still ongoing with some improvements planned while operations are restricted due to heavy traffic
On October 15, 1926, the first airmail service between Miami and Sebring was started. The route ran from MIA to SBP and then back to MIA. On December 1, 1926, the first commercial airline service was started between Miami and Sebring. The flight originated from MIA and flew to Pompano Beach before flying back to Miami.
