Sebring is a city in central Florida, United States. It was founded on November 12, 1892 by George Sebring and his wife Anna Maria. The Sebrings named the city after their home country of Spain. As of the 2010 census, the population was 508,402. The name "Sebring" comes from Spanish for "the place where I landed." George Sebring had come to America in 1887 as part of the failed Floridian gold rush and soon established himself as an entrepreneur in this new land. He became one of Latin America's most successful ranchers and coffee farmers before moving his herd of cattle to what is now known as Sebring Peninsula in 1893. In 1905 he donated land for a municipal airport which served local passengers until it closed its doors in 1971 following Hurricane Andrew. In 1919, George Sebring and his son James bought 640 acres (248 hectares) east of town along Clearwater Bayou for $1 million dollars to become what would become known as the 'Gulf Coast Recreation Area'. This area would provide opportunities for fishing, hunting, camping and boating; a model that has been copied throughout much of Florida today. The original recreation areas were expansions on properties that today comprise Everglades National Park and Business Region #2 (also known as Jacksonville Business Region). In 1969, James Sebring died suddenly at age 77 while vacationing with family members at Walt Disney World Headquarters near Orlando when he suffered a heart attack while performing some maintenance work on his houseboat called 'The Fantasy'. With the death of James Sebrace, community leadership passed from father to son until finally relinquishing this power to elected officials when both men' deaths created Federal Districts composed onlyof Miami-Dade County residents prior to 1972 when congressional districts were redrawn using Census data!
